Former Carlton coach David Teague has joined AFL powerhouses Richmond as an assistant coach, less than a month after being sacked from the top job at the Blues.

The Tigers announced on Monday they had secured the services of Teague from the 2022 season, where he will serve under head coach Damien Hardwick.

The 40-year-old was unceremoniously sacked by Carlton last month with a year left to run on his contract after another underwhelming season.

Over his two and a half years in charge at Carlton, Teague had a coaching record of 21 wins from 50 games.

He said he was excited to be part of the coaching team at Richmond and help the Tigers rise up the ladder, after they missed the finals for the first time since 2016.

“Coaching is my passion, and I am excited by the opportunity to get to work with a new group of players and at a new club,” Teague said.

“I am looking forward to getting to work this pre-season and embracing the challenge that we all have, to climb the Tigers back up the ladder in 2022.”

“We obviously like David. He’s got a great knowledge, he’s coached the backs at West Coast, he’s coached the forwards at Adelaide and had great success there,” Hardwick told AFL 360.

“Sometimes I think what happens is you can have a go at senior coaching and you can come back and you can learn a lot.

“We’re really excited to welcome him on board. He’s a great coach, got great knowledge, fantastic fella and it’s a big win for us.”

Richmond football performance boss Tim Livingstone said Teague would be a huge asset to the Tigers’ coaching staff.

“David is a highly skilled and experienced coach who will be of great benefit to our players and his fellow coaches,” Livingstone said.

“We are excited to have David on board and welcome him and his family to the Richmond Football Club.”

Carlton has had a month of upheaval since sacking Teague and is yet to find a replacement senior coach.

Teague’s departure came after an independent review into the club’s football department.

Several high-profile figures at the Blues have left in recent weeks, including chief executive Cain Liddle and assistant coach Dale Amos.

Last week Carlton announced it had recruited former Geelong CEO and respected football administrator Brian Cook as its new chief executive.
