A “messy” night following Geelong’s premiership win may had ended with the Deputy Prime Minister branding himself with a celebratory tattoo.

Mad Cats fan Richard Marles left host Karl Stefanovic and sparring partner and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton shocked with his revelation on Friday morning.

“I'm not going to show you the tattoo, but it did get a bit messy on Sunday morning,” he told the Today show.

The member for the Geelong-based seat of Corio was sighted among the 10,000 strong crowd at the Cats’ family day decked out in the AFL team’s merchandise.

Mr Dutton was quick to encourage Mr Marles to reveal more but the Today show host was eager to shut down the conversation, preferring to put the focus back on the upcoming NRL grand final.

“To ask a specific question like that of me is obviously above my pay grade. You are not a nice person for doing that. I know nothing about (NRL), as you know,” Mr Marles, a Victorian, joked back.

“The head says Penrith, heart says Parramatta.”

Mr Dutton later revealed he would be cheering for the Parramatta Eels in the decider on Sunday evening.

Mr Marles added it was no surprise that he was spotted wearing a blue and white tie during his media appearance on Friday.

NCA NewsWire’s eagle-eyed snappers captured Mr Marles wearing the Cats-coloured tie all throughout parliament this week.

“It will come off – I don't know, (maybe) on New Year’s Day,” Mr Marles joked.

The celebrations are a far cry from the tears Mr Marles is reported to have shed during a grand final watch party in Canberra two years ago when Geelong was brutally dismantled by Richmond.
