Port Adelaide news: Jase Burgoyne set to don No. 7 guernsey worn by dad, Peter Burgoyne, while eyeing Xavier Duursma’s wing spot

The number seven is one of the most significant guernseys in Port Adelaide’s history. A famous Power name is set to wear it – and is eyeing Xavier Duursma’s wing spot.

Jase Burgoyne was on the dais at the MCG in 2004 when his dad, Peter, collected his premiership medal while wearing the No. 7 guernsey.

Two decades after that flag triumph, Jase will don the jumper for the Power.

The 20-year-old will switch from No. 36, which he has worn in 13 games across two seasons.

Number 7 had been vacant since Xavier Duursma was traded to Essendon.

Jase asked Port Adelaide football manager Chris Davies if he could have it once it became available.

“I was pretty happy with 36 and I thought I’d stay in that number for the rest of my career, but it’s not every day a number like 7 comes up,” said Jase, who was 14 months old when Peter played in the Power’s AFL flag.

“Dad got me to where I am today so to be able to repay the favour, wear the number he wore and run around in 7 … it’s a pretty big deal.”

The guernsey is of the most significant in Port Adelaide’s history, made famous by the club’s greatest player, Russell Ebert.

Davies gave Jase some advice when granting his request: “Just make sure you know the history of the number”.

“It’s a big honour,” Jase told this masthead.

“I know how big this number is in this football club and with the fans.”

After taking over Duursma’s number, Jase was also setting his sights on his former teammate’s position.

Jase, who added 5kg during his break, was set to train on a wing all pre-season.

“(The coaches) said it’s up to me to take that spot, I’ve just got to work hard, train well,” he said.

“In my exit meeting, Kenny (Hinkley) challenged me to put about 5kg on, so I gave myself a week’s break then got the strength and conditioning coach to give me a program and was straight back into it.”

Peter was looking forward to seeing another Burgoyne in the No. 7 guernsey.

Jase’s grandfather, Peter Sr, donned it in country footy, including for Tasman in Port Lincoln.

Peter, who played 240 games for the Power from 1997-2009, wore 26 for his first three AFL seasons before switching to No. 7 to honour his dad.

He said it made sense for Jase to make his own mark in the jumper.

“As a father, I’m proud, but this is about Jase now finding his way in the AFL and cementing his spot in the side, and trying to have a long and successful career,” Peter said.

“That’s what would make me more happy than anything.”
