Port Adelaide will have at least two key coaching roles to fill after not renewing club great Chad Cornes’s contract for next year.
The call on Cornes, who played 239 games at the Power from 1999-2011 and had been an assistant there since 2016, was part of a reshuffle ahead of Josh Carr’s first season in charge.
Midfield coach Carr will take the reins from Ken Hinkley at the end of this campaign, meaning his on-ball role and Cornes’s forwards post will both be vacant.
Port Adelaide football boss Chris Davies said the club wanted to let Cornes know as early as possible.
“Chad has been an outstanding servant of our club as a premiership player, as a coach within our program since returning at the end of 2015 and of course as a member of our Hall of Fame,” Davies said.
“Given his tenure at the club, we wanted to provide Chad with clarity as early as possible so he has maximum time to consider his future.”
Cornes started his coaching career at GWS as a playing assistant in 2012 and 2013.
He remained at the Giants for two more seasons before returning to Alberton to become Port’s SANFL coach ahead of the 2016 campaign.
After being at the helm of the Magpies for two years, Cornes had stints as forwards development coach and overseeing the defence before shifting to his present role in 2023.
The Power’s other assistant is Collingwood premiership defender turned backline coach Tyson Goldsack.
In arrangement with the AFL Coaches Association, clubs are requested to inform assistants by August 1 if they will be retained for the next season.
