‘One of the worst’: Sam De Koning shreds dad in hilarious interview

Geelong star Sam De Koning has hilariously given his dad a serve after the young star took the biscuits against his brother’s side.

Geelong key defender Sam De Koning has ripped his dad as “one of the worst Footscray players ever” in a hilarious post-match interview after his side’s 30-point win over Carlton.

The 21-year-old De Koning, who claimed the wood over older brother and Carlton ruck Tom, 23, in a 12.13 (85) to 8.7 (55) result, saved the best swipe for his father Terry.

Terry, who played 31 games for Footscray in the early 1980s but well short of qualifying his sons for the father-son rule, didn’t attend the match as he and his wife Jackie were in Bali on a holiday which had been postponed three times.

But Sam was asked by the Channel 7 commentary team about his dad and the 21-year-old couldn’t help himself.

Hamish McLachlan asked him: “What sort of player does he tell you he was?”

Sam: “He says he’s a champion.”

McLachlan: “Why didn’t he played 130, 230?”

Sam: “If you look up his name online it comes up with one of the worst Footscray players ever or something like that.

“No, he was good. Whenever the old replays are on he chucks it on replay for us. He says he was a better kick than us two. I probably showed him that tonight actually.”

In a story before the match on the Carlton website, Terry explained his father was a mad Carlton fan and Jackie explained: “I think Tom’s got the whole family sitting in the Carlton enclosure... and I reckon Sam’s girlfriend sitting in there because he (Tom) wanted her to be part of the family”.

The 204cm Sam was drafted No. 19 in the 2019 National Draft and debuted with a single game in 2021.

However, he was quickly established himself as one of the keys for the Cats’ march to the top of the ladder, having played in all but two matches for the side this season.

Sam is also second in betting for the Rising Star behind the all-but certain winner Nick Daicos from Collingwood.

Geelong coach Chris Scott paid tribute to his young star for going the hard path to the AFL.

“The current idea in the AFL is that if you’re a young player you should walk into a team and get opportunity straight away,” he said. “The great Geelong players of a decade ago didn’t get that luxury.

“We thought it appropriate that Sam got some experience in different parts of the ground and that when he came in to play consistent AFL footy that he was really prepared.

“We’re not saying it’s a beautiful plan that’s come together. Virtually all the credit should go to Sam himself, he’s an overnight success that took three years.”

Scott said he didn’t want De Koning “thrown to the wolves” as other young players have been brought in before they’re ready in the past.

Sam had a brilliant performance against the Blues, keeping Carlton’s Harry McKay goalless for the first time since round 9, 2020.
