Jeremy Finlayson starts talks over new Port Adelaide contract

One of Port Adelaide’s veteran forwards has started talks with the club over a new deal, with a young star’s future set to be decided before the end of the season.

Port Adelaide forward Jeremy Finlayson is starting contract talks with the Power as he looks to extend his three-year stay at Alberton.

Finlayson is in the last season of his deal after arriving from GWS for a future third-round selection at the end of 2021.

The 28-year-old is sidelined for the remainder of the season because of a lacerated spleen suffered in a collision in the Power’s loss against Gold Coast earlier this month.

Finlayson had a rollercoaster campaign, kicking 12.17 from 12 matches.

He served a three-game suspension between rounds five and seven for making a homophobic slur, was the substitute against Carlton in May and was dropped two weeks later after the Power’s bye.

Finlayson wants to remain at the club and has shown promise in his role as a secondary ruckman.

Last year he booted 28 goals from his first 12 matches, before fading late in the campaign.

He was demoted to the sub’s role in the semi-final against his former side GWS.

Finlayson is one of 10 Power players remaining without deals for next season.

Defender Lachie Jones is also uncontracted for 2025 but he is expected to re-sign before the end of the campaign.

Port Adelaide considers the 22-year-old an important part of its future.

The Power selected Jones, who came through its Next Generation Academy, at pick 20 in the 2020 national draft.

He has played 48 games, including 13 this season.

After an inconsistent start to the year, Jones impressed in the home victory over the Western Bulldogs three rounds ago, then was subbed out with concussion against Gold Coast a week later.

He returned to Port’s side to face Carlton at Marvel Stadium on Friday night.

Spearhead Charlie Dixon and former captain Travis Boak are among the other Power players in the last year of their contracts.

Dixon seems likely to be in his final season, while Boak has put together two strong weeks as another late call beckons.
