Geelong superstar Jeremy Cameron was the victim of a headbutt attack in a Geelong pub on Saturday night that is under police investigation.

Cameron, 30, was watching the cricket in a small group at the Barwon Club in South Geelong on Saturday night when he was approached by a patron.

It is understood the pair had an amicable conversation before Cameron was headbutted out of the blue in an unprovoked attack, with contact made to Cameron’s mouth region.

Geelong informed the AFL Integrity Unit about the incident, a standard procedure for such off-field matters.

The AFL has since cleared Cameron of any fault and confirmed the Cats informed the league immediately of the attack.

Victoria Police Leading Senior Constable Adam West confirmed an investigation into the alleged assault was underway.

He said officers were called to the Moorabool Street venue around 11pm, where they were told a man, 30, was approached and assaulted by a 39-year-old male.

There was no further incident and the alleged offender was removed by security.

Geelong reviewed the footage of the incident, which was captured by CCTV, and was comfortable the vision supported Cameron’s version of events.

A spokesman for the Barwon Club, a popular venue just 550m away from GMHBA Stadium, said the matter was in the hands of police, but declined to comment further.

The AFL Players’ Association has reached out to Cameron and the AFL in a bid to find out more information about the incident.

Cameron was shaken but has been able to train all week and is available to take on Port Adelaide on Saturday.

It is understood he suffered no adverse impact from Saturday’s headbutt and trained in the club’s main session on Wednesday.

It looms as a crucial game for the Cats, whose finals hopes remain in the balance, with Cameron’s forward line offsider, Tom Hawkins, is out with a hamstring injury.

Cameron will guide whether the incident is taken further and it is understood he is keen to move on from the headbutt.

It has been a rough recent period for Cameron, who still sits sixth on the AFL’s Coleman Medal leaderboard despite a challenging past month.

Cameron was knocked out in a nasty collision in round 15 with teammate Gary Rohan, where he missed two matches.

He then suffered multiple bumps in the head on his return to the field against Essendon, requiring attention for cuts to the face.

Cameron booted 1.5 in Geelong’s disappointing loss to Fremantle on Saturday at GMHBA Stadium, just hours before the pub incident took place.
