Townsend made his senior debut for the Giants in 2012, playing in the club’s first ever AFL game.

He joined Richmond in 2016 and made four AFL appearances that year. Townsend came into the Tigers’ side in round 22 of their drought-breaking 2017 premiership season and held his spot through to the grand final.

He was a member of Richmond’s 2019 premiership-winning VFL side, which was mentored to victory by incoming Collingwood senior coach Craig McRae.

After being delisted by Richmond at the conclusion of the 2019 season, Townsend spent a year at Essendon, where he was also cut at the end of the year.

He had to wait until round 21 of this season to play his first game at the Suns and only managed to run out at senior level once more after that.

After his first game in Suns colours, Townsend, who speaks with a stutter, won praise from throughout the AFL world for bravely giving a post-match interview.

Townsend will be able to test the market in the delisted free agency period, which begins on November 3.

The Suns have also delisted Category B rookie Luke Towey, whom they picked up in the 2019 off-season.

The Irishman returns home having not broken into the senior side during his time on the glitter strip.

“It hasn’t been an easy two seasons of AFL football, particularly for someone brand new to learning the game like Luke has,” said Gold Coast’s general manager of player talent and strategy, Craig Cameron.

“We want to commend him for his attitude and dedication to the Suns over the last two years and wish him all the best for what lies ahead.”
