AFL star Adam Cerra has reportedly requested a trade to Carlton next season as he seeks to part ways with Fremantle.

Footy journalist Mitch Cleary broke the news on Twitter, solving the mystery of where the highly-rated 21-year-old would nominate as his preferred destination after the Dockers confirmed last month he had asked to be traded back home to Victoria.

Cerra has been the subject of intrigue all year after he reportedly knocked back a monster, four-year contract extension offer from Fremantle. Veteran footy journalist Kim Hagdorn had reported in April the Blues were preparing a contract offer of around $2.8 million over four years, while Fremantle was also reported to have tabled a slightly richer offer around $3 million over four years.

Fremantle football manager Peter Bell said in August there was “disappointment” in seeing Cerra leave after playing 76 games for the club.

Cerra had been taken with the No. 5 overall pick at the 2017 AFL National Draft and the Dockers are expected to demand a high price for the young gun, with earlier reports suggesting Carlton would have to cough up a trade package that would include the No. 6 draft pick they will have at the 2021 Draft.

Picking up Cerra would be a coup for Carlton, who are looking to put the disaster that was 2021 behind them under newly-appointed coach Michael Voss

Last week the Brisbane Lions legend signed a three-year deal to take charge of the Blues as he replaced David Teague, who was sacked at the end of the season.

Carlton conducted a review of its football department after missing out on finals for an eighth straight year and ultimately decided to cut Teague loose after his second full season as coach.

It was reported the Blues wanted outgoing Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson or ex-Fremantle and St Kilda mentor Lyon to take charge of the team but they had to look elsewhere when those two candidates ruled themselves out of the running.

The AFL Trade Period officially kicks off next week.
