The GWS Giants survived a scare in Hobart to secure the four points against North Melbourne on Sunday afternoon.

In what was a seesawing opening half of footy, the Giants took control of the contest halfway through the third quarter and never looked back.

A resurgent North took the fight right up to their opponents but ran out of puff in the fourth quarter as the Giants registered the 15.13 (103) to 11.9 (75) win.

Skipper Toby Greene was at his mercurial best all over the field, but it was one moment of magic in front of goal that stole the show.

After a snap toward goal from Stephen Coniglio, Greene was tussling on the goal line with Luke McDonald but pulled a rabbit out of the hat.

As he held McDonald off he stuck his right boot out to perfectly soccer the ball through the goals and record his second goal of the contest.

“He is a freak show, every time he comes to the park,” Dwayne Russell said.

He struck again moments later as he sharked a tap from ruckman Kieren Briggs, tearing through the heart of a contest before snapping truly for his third.

But it wasn’t just in front of goal where he was dominant, Greene gathered 24 disposals while having five clearances and 458 metres gained.

The win pushes the Giants to 14th on the ladder, leaping ahead of Carlton, with a 5-8 record after 13 rounds.

Despite the loss North showed promising signs once again as they took the fight up to the Giants and looked to have the upper hand throughout the opening half.

Nick Larkey lead the way in front of goal with four goals while Tarryn Thomas’ return to the team continued in stellar fashion as he slotted three goals.

Veteran leader Jack Ziebell brought his own footy to the contest as he collected a game-high 30 disposals to narrowly edge out teammate Liam Shiels.

The Giants will return home next weekend for a Saturday afternoon clash with Fremantle while North will tackle the Western Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium in the late Sunday game.
