A trial date has been set as a former AFL star plans to fight allegations he was involved in trafficking drugs interstate.

A former St Kilda footballer is set to fight allegations he was involved in an interstate drug-trafficking plot as a trial date has been listed.

Sam Fisher, 40, briefly appeared in the Victorian County Court on Thursday from his lawyer’s office in Melbourne.

Police allege the South Australian-born ex-player was behind a shipment of drugs seized in Western Australia in April last year.

WA Police allegedly located 1kg of methamphetamine and 84 grams of cocaine in a rangehood sent from Melbourne.

The alleged drugs were valued at $230,000, with a Perth man also arrested.

Mr Fisher, who was named best and fairest by two clubs over a 11-year AFL career, has pleaded not guilty to eight charges, including drug trafficking.

The former defender played 228 games for the Saints between 2005 and his retirement in 2016.

He was represented in court by prominent criminal defence barrister Dermott Dann KC when the allegations were listed for an estimated 10-day trial in April next year.

He will return to court in February 2024.
