The Associated Public Schools of Victoria (APS) competition is the most renowned and talented Australian rules school league in the country.

There is plenty on the line as schools fight for bragging rights, while AFL recruiters flock to games to catch a glimpse of the best potential draft talent in action at the prestigious schools.

The APS football competition began in 1891 and is steeped in tradition, with the latest edition kicking off on Saturday.

Brighton Grammar took out the APS premiership last year after it knocked off the Matthew Lloyd-coached Haileybury College by a single point.

The two powerhouse schools face off on Saturday in the headline act of round one.
