Carlton has suffered a brutal pre-season injury blow with confirmation that Jack Silvagni has ruptured his ACL and will miss the entire 2024 season.

The forward sustained the injury at training on Thursday after participating in match simulation.

He came from the field and was sent for scans, confirming the hammer blow for Silvagni.

He’ll undergo surgery on his knee before beginning his rehabilitation.

“Jack had put in such a significant body of work over summer to put himself in a great position to attack the year, so we are all really feeling for Jack right now,” Blues footy boss Brad Lloyd said.

“While the emotion right now is one of disappointment, it is well known that Jack’s work ethic and commitment to the football club is unwavering, and it is his strong character that will be his biggest strength through his recovery process.

“We will be with him every step of the way through his rehab, and no doubt the entire Carlton faithful will be.

“With the energy he brings, he’ll continue to have a positive impact around the club and within the playing group throughout this season.”

It comes just weeks after key defender Jacob Weitering sustained a high-grade calf tear which has put his start of the season in doubt.

Silvagni, 26, to that point, had an uninterrupted pre-season and was seeking to once again establish himself in Carlton’s best 23 after a knee injury derailed his season and left him out of the Blues’ dream September run in 2023.

He sustained a knee injury in the Round 19 game against West Coast, then returned five weeks later in the VFL against the Gold Coast reserves but re-aggravated his knee early in the game that kept him out of the finals series.

Silvagni signed a fresh two-year contract extension last August, tying him to the Blues until 2025 after speculation throughout the year the third generation player could leave Carlton in search for greater opportunities elsewhere.
