Collingwood has held on to pull off a thrilling four-point win over Carlton at the MCG on Sunday.

The Magpies led for most of the game and pulled ahead in the last quarter but the Blues mounted a spirited comeback to trail by five points with a minute remaining.

Carlton had a chance to snatch victory but fell just short when Jack Silvagni’s shot on goal went through for a behind.

Sam Walsh, Sam Docherty, George Hewett and Adam Cerra all had 30 disposals or more, but it wasn’t enough to beat Collingwood, who had solid contributions across the board.

With the Blues rallying in the final term, Collingwood’s Mason Cox chose a good time to bob up and kick his first goal of the season to keep the Magpies in front.

Charlie Curnow kicked four goals for Carlton but the Magpies prevailed 79 (11.13) to 75 (11.9) to take bragging rights over their traditional rivals.

The win lifts Collingwood to 10th on the ladder while the Blues slip to fifth as the top eight becomes more congested.

Carlton’s defeat was soured by key defender Jacob Weitering suffering a serious shoulder injury and was subsituted out of the game in the first quarter.

Blues coach Michael Voss said Weitering’s injury was “more towards the major end” of the spectrum and he would see a surgeon this week.

Weitering is set for an extended stint on the sidelines, while Carlton has already had to contend without key forward Harry McKay and ruckman Marc Pittonet for periods this season.
