‘Chaos’: MCG goes ‘ballistic’ as all-out brawl sparks mayhem

An all-out brawl erupted between Geelong and Collingwood on Saturday night that led to two of seven straight goals for the Pies in an extraordinary passage at the MCG.

After Pies youngster Ollie Henry chased down Geelong skipper Joel Selwood and kicked a goal from the resulting free kick, Cats defender Tom Atkins could be seen fighting Collingwood player Jack Ginnivan.

From there, a significant fight broke out between both sides and Ginnivan was awarded a free kick, putting through the Cats’ second goal in under a minute.

“This is huge,” Luke Darcy said on Channel 7 of the “chaos”.

“We’re going to get a second free kick here. That’s a massive moment in this game.”

After Ginnivan kicked the goal, Darcy added, “It’s going to erupt at the MCG. Magpie fans are going ballistic.”

Those two majors were fourth and fifth of a remarkable seven-goal run that brought the Pies from trailing to leading by 30 points at the end of the third quarter.

It was a nine-goal third term for the Pies in an extraordinary term, where they were kicking goals with virtually every inside 50 entry.

However the supercharged third quarter wasn’t enough as the Cats romped home to claim a famous 16.8 (104) to 13.13 (91) victory.
