CEO Cain Liddle has been sacked as the upheaval continues at Carlton.

The Blues had already fired coach David Teague last month after missing out on the finals for an eighth straight season and Liddle is another victim of the club’s efforts to turn its fortunes around.

The fallout to the Blues’ horror show in 2021 now includes Liddle’s scalp as the club seeks to address its under-performing football department and find a new coach after the preferred candidates pulled out.

Outgoing Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson suggested he would take time away from footy in 2022, leaving former Fremantle and St Kilda mentor Ross Lyon as the frontrunner. Lyon had spoken publicly about his interest in the role but pulled out last week, with reports citing he was put off by how the hiring process was being run.

Channel 7’s Tom Browne reports new Carlton president Luke Sayers wanted Lyon, but Liddle didn’t share the same enthusiasm, which was the “final straw” for the embattled boss.

Liddle became CEO in late 2017 after working at Richmond in other roles.

Carlton is reportedly keen to bring outgoing Geelong CEO Brian Cook to the club.

Liddle’s departure comes after Teague was sacked following an independent review into Carlton’s failings.

“The review has found that while the coaching group had the expertise required, it had been unable to have an effective impact on a playing group that is required to deliver results at the elite level,” new Carlton president Luke Sayers said in a statement last month.

“It was identified that there had been confusion associated with the game plan at times and on-field, the team has underdelivered in its ability to consistently defend, win the contest and apply pressure.

“This was highlighted, but not limited to, an overt, consistent focus on offence at a detriment to the defensive side of the game.

“While the easier option would have been to wait a further 12 months in the hope these deficiencies would change, the in-depth data gained over a significant period of time as part of this review process left no doubt that such an option would not be in the best interests of the Club. As such, it would have been irresponsible to ignore the decisions that had to be made.”
