Carlton 1-44 list analysis: Which Blues are staying and which are going?

The Blues rose off the canvas to get one game away from the last day of the season, so is it time to recognise them as a serious contender? Chris Cavanagh analyses the state of their list.

It fell one win short of a grand final berth this year, but Carlton is locked and loaded for 2024 and beyond.

The Blues put their abilities on show in the second half of this season and shape as a scary prospect in the years to come.

They won 11 of their last 13 matches – with a playing group that only looks on the rise.

Carlton’s list ranked eighth in the competition for average age this season and 13th for average games played.

Following the retirement of Ed Curnow, the Blues are set to begin next season with just two players over the age of 30 – Nic Newman and Sam Docherty.

Carlton coach Michael Voss said after the 16-point preliminary final loss to the Brisbane Lions that his side would “sit with the disappointment” of falling short of their ultimate goal.

However, the challenges that the group endured this season are set to hold it in good stead going forward.

“What I hope it turns into is that we’re a hungry football club and we’re a hungry football team,” Voss said.

“We want to figure at this end of the season more often to give ourselves that chance.

“You’re continually looking at yourself to try and get better and we’ll be no different.

“We’ve experienced some real tough adversity as a club and we’ve been able to navigate our way through that. We had some of that this year but it’s been that collective movement that’s been really impressive for us. We feel like we’ve got some really important pieces there, but obviously we’ve still got a bit to get after.”

The outside running ability that Carlton added to its list last summer through trade acquisition Blake Acres and draftee Ollie Hollands proved critical in this year’s success, while onballer Patrick Cripps and bookends Charlie Curnow and Jacob Weitering all produced bumper campaigns.

The Blues look likely to lose some fringe players in Zac Fisher and Paddy Dow, but their big guns are all signed up on long-term deals, including Cripps (2027), Weitering (2025), Curnow (2029), Sam Walsh (2026) and Harry McKay (2030).

Next year will mark 29 years since Carlton’s last premiership success in 1995.

Could 2024 be the year that the drought ends?

You wouldn’t want to bet against it.

We can finally smell what the Blues are cooking.

1. JACK SILVAGNI

Age: 25 Games: 115 (2023 games: 16) Contract ends: 2025

The third-generation Blue faced a nervous wait for a new contact, but agreed on a new two-year deal in September. Silvagni’s versatility to play as a third-tall forward or pinch-hit in the ruck has made him a valuable asset for the Blues. He suffered a knee injury at the wrong time of year and missed the club’s finals campaign, but Carlton is confident he can bounce back and further evolve his game next year.

Status: Staying

2. PADDY DOW

Age: 23 Games: 73 (2023 games: 10) Contract ends: 2023

The midfielder played a role in the Blues’ charge towards September, after spending the first half of the season stuck in the VFL. However, he was dropped for the club’s first final when some injured stars returned. Having played just 14 senior games in the past two years, a fresh start looks on the cards for the former No. 3 draft pick. St Kilda has kept a close eye on Dow and looks a likely suitor.

Status: Going

3. JESSE MOTLOP

Age: 19 Games: 33 (2023 games: 21) Contract ends: 2025

The dynamo small forward was overlooked for just three games that he was available for this year as he built on a promising debut season in 2022. A creative X-Factor player who is a much-loved figure around the club, Motlop averaged 1.1 goals a game, scoring multiple goals in 10 of his matches. He is still searching for a little more consistency, but Carlton has been thrilled with Motlop’s development so far and rewarded him with a two-year contract extension in May.

Status: Staying

4. LOCHIE O’BRIEN

Age: 24 Games: 66 (2023 games: 6) Contract ends: 2024

The No. 10 draft pick from 2017 signed a two-year contract extension on the back of a career-best season in 2022, but was unable to back it up this year amid a squeeze for midfield spots. O’Brien featured in just six senior games this year, starting as substitute in four of those. But he wasn’t sighted at AFL level after round 12 and is now searching for a new home, despite having still been under contract.

Status: Delisted

5. ADAM CERRA

Age: 23 Games: 116 (2023 games: 22) Contract ends: 2025

The young star midfielder enjoyed a career-best season in 2023, averaging 25.5 disposals and 4.5 clearances as one of Carlton’s most consistent performers across the season. He also stood up in the first finals series of his career, recording at least 20 disposals in each of the Blues’ three matches in September. Secured from Fremantle at the end of 2021 in exchange for pick six and a future third-round selection, Carlton is getting good bang for buck from Cerra.

6. ZAC WILLIAMS

Age: 29 Games: 136 (2023 games: 0) Contract ends: 2026

Injuries have cruelled the rebounding defender. The former Greater Western Sydney speedster has played just 23 games in three years since joining Carlton at the end of 2020. He missed the entire 2023 after rupturing his ACL in February, but the Blues will be hoping he can finally get himself fit next year and become a regular fixture for them.

Status: Staying

7. MATTHEW KENNEDY

Age: 26 Games: 94 (2023 games: 16) Contract ends: 2025

A mainstay in the Carlton side when he has been available over the past two years, the tough inside midfielder averaged 18.2 disposals and 3.1 clearances across his 16 matches this season. He also spent some time rotating in defence and forward roles this year, given the talent in the Blues’ onball brigade. Kennedy had eight weeks on the sidelines after suffering a high-grade MCL injury in round 17, but returned for the club’s semi-final and preliminary final.

Status: Staying

8. LACHIE FOGARTY

Age: 24 Games: 55 (2023 games: 12) Contract ends: 2024

The pressure forward was overlooked for a year by coach Michael Voss, not playing a game between round 14 last season and round 14 this season. However, the Blues won 10 of the 12 games that Fogarty played in the second half of this season. He averaged only 0.3 goals across those games, but rated above average for forward-50 pressure and elite for tackles at an average of 4.8 a game. A real workhorse who gives everything to play his role, Fogarty was rewarded with a new one-year deal in September.

Status: Staying

9. PATRICK CRIPPS

Age: 28 Games: 183 (2023 games: 24) Contract ends: 2027

Like always, the Carlton skipper gave his all this season and helped lead the charge to his first finals appearance in September. The 2022 Brownlow Medal winner battled through a rib injury late in the year, which saw him wear extra padding during the finals series. However, he still managed 27 disposals and nine clearances against Melbourne in a big semi-final. While he didn’t quite reach the heights of a huge 2022, Cripps still averaged 24.8 disposals and 6.8 clearances through the midfield and was part of the initial All-Australian squad of 44 players.

Status: Staying

10. HARRY MCKAY

Age: 25 Games: 107 (2023 games: 21) Contract ends: 2030

The 2021 Coleman Medal winner had the goalkicking yips this season, but coach Michael Voss scoffed at suggestions late in the year that McKay was not in Carlton’s best 22 and played the key forward for every game that he was available for. McKay kicked 29 goals for the season, but his accuracy was at a career-worst 37.7 per cent. Concussed in the elimination final, McKay missed the semi-final but returned to kick two goals in the preliminary final against Brisbane. There was much speculation mid-season that he could make a move to Sydney, but it doesn’t look like the Blues will let that happen after signing McKay to a seven-year contract extension last October.

11. MITCH MCGOVERN

Age: 28 Games: 110 (2023 games: 22) Contract ends: 2025

A one-time whipping boy of Carlton fans, McGovern finally got his body right this year and was able to reap the rewards. He missed just four matches through injury this season, after featuring in just 12 games across the previous two years due to injury. McGovern ranked elite for intercept marks (2.5 a game) and above average for intercept possessions (5.9 a game) this season. He signed a new two-year deal on reduced money in August, which included an achievable trigger for a third year. That could keep McGovern at the club until the end of 2026.

Status: Staying

12. TOM DE KONING

Age: 24 Games: 60 (2023 games: 19) Contract ends: 2025

Blues fans would have been thrilled with the development of this exciting big man this year – and even more thrilled to know he is sticking around. De Koning knocked back an eight-year offer from Sydney to stay at Princes Park, signing a two-year contract extension that takes him through to his free agency year of 2025. De Koning was able to impact both in the ruck and playing as an extra tall forward this season, averaging 12 disposals, 17.7 hitouts and 0.5 goals a game.

Status: Staying

13. BLAKE ACRES

Age: 27 Games: 145 (2023 games: 25) Contract ends: 2025

There’s no doubt that Acres was the bargain buy of last year’s trade period in what was a stellar list management decision from the Blues. Secured from Fremantle at the end of last season in exchange for a future third-round pick, Acres played the wing role beautifully this year with his huge running power. He averaged elite numbers for disposals (23 a game) and metres gained (424m a game) and his ability to get back and support his defence as well as push forward to hit the scoreboard was vital in Carlton’s first two finals.

Status: Staying

14. OLLIE HOLLANDS

Age: 19 Games: 19 (2023 games: 19) Contract ends: 2026

The No. 11 draft pick from last year signed a two-year contract extension in March before he had even made his AFL debut, but lived up to expectations in his first season. A quality runner on a wing who brings great pressure and is willing to put his body on the line, Hollands averaged 14 disposals and 268 metres gained this season and revived an AFL Rising Star nomination in round 21. He was overlooked for the club’s elimination final against Sydney, but was substitute for the semi-final against Melbourne and was then part of the starting 22 in the preliminary final against Brisbane Lions.

15. SAM DOCHERTY

Age: 29 Games: 167 (2023 games: 23) Contract ends: 2025

A great comeback story in 2022 to finish second in the club’s best-and-fairest count, the former Carlton co-captain produced another strong season in 2023. Playing a range of roles including halfback, wing and onball, Docherty averaged 25.5 disposals and 424 metres gained. His courage was on display in September when he played out the semi-final against Melbourne with a dislocated shoulder and then backed up to feature in the preliminary final the following week. Docherty signed a two-year contract extension in March, which should mean he finishes his career at Carlton.

Status: Staying

16. JACK CARROLL

Age: 20 Games: 6 (2023 games: 1) Contract ends: 2024

After playing five senior games last season, Carroll found himself stuck in the VFL for most of most of the year. He featured in only one AFL match in round 4 after starting as the substitute and didn’t get another look-in after that. Carroll’s VFL form was solid, averaging 23.2 disposals from his 12 matches. He signed a two-year contract extension last March, tying him to the club until the end of 2024.

Status: Staying

17. BRODIE KEMP

Age: 22 Games: 23 (2023 games: 17) Contract ends: 2025

The No. 17 pick in the 2019 national draft, Kemp joined Carlton having just done an ACL which would sideline him throughout 2020 and then suffered a foot injury which wiped out the first half of his 2021 season. However, he has since got himself fit again and enjoyed a breakout career-best season in defence this year. Kemp has an ability to clamp down on opponents, as well as win the ball back and kickstart the Blues’ offence. He averaged 15.8 disposals, 6.1 intercept possessions, 4 spoils and 238 metres gained this year. Kemp inked a two-year contract extension in July.

Status: Staying

18. SAM WALSH

Age: 23 Games: 99 (2023 games: 18) Contract ends: 2026

The Blues’ Mr Consistent, Walsh very rarely has an off day and was a star throughout his first AFL finals campaign. Walsh logged 28 or more disposals in each of the Blues’ three finals, while he also booted two goals in a close semi-final against Melbourne. Overall the midfielder averaged 28.5 disposals, 4.8 inside-50s and 6.7 score involvements for the year, again proving an important cog for Carlton with his elite outside run. The impressive campaign came despite an interrupted start to the year. Walsh missed the first four games with a back injury that he sustained during pre-season.

Status: Staying

19. COREY DURDIN

Age: 21 Games: 34 (2023 games: 11) Contract ends: 2024

The small forward became a regular fixture in the Carlton forward line last year and that continued in the first half of this season before knee and hamstring injuries struck. Durdin returned for round 24, but was then dropped for the elimination final against Melbourne. The forward 50 pressure that he brings is what Carlton is all about, while he also averaged a goal a game this year. Durdin signed a two-year contract extension last March, so is still contracted for next year.

Status: Staying

20. LACHIE PLOWMAN

Age: 29 Games: 145 (2023 games: 1) Contract ends: 2023

Time in the AFL is up for the former No. 3 draft pick, who announced his retirement after the conclusion of Carlton’s season. Plowman featured in just one senior game this season against Adelaide in round 5. He had signed a three-year contract extension at the end of 2020 and was a regular in the senior team in 2021 and 2022, but the Blues took a different path this season as Brodie Kemp emerged and Mitch McGovern got himself fit.

Status: Retired

21. JACK MARTIN

Age: 28 Games: 148 (2023 games: 13) Contract ends: 2024

It has been an up-and-down four years for Martin since he left Gold Coast Suns to join Carlton on a five-year deal at the end of 2019. However, after some injury issues in the first half of this year he certainly had an influential second half of the season. Martin is not a high possession winner and averaged only 10.9 disposals this season, but made the most of those touches as he averaged 4.7 score involvements and 1.3 goals. His tackling and pressure is also important at times. Martin was suspended for the semi-final, but kicked two goals in each of Carlton’s other two finals. He will be looking for a big year in 2024 as he searches for a new contract.

22. CALEB MARCHBANK

Age: 26 Games: 60 (2023 games: 8) Contract ends: 2023

After three injury-riddled years, Marchbank worked his way back into the senior team in the second half of this season and played a role down back as a key defender. He played in the final eight games of Carlton’s campaign, averaging 13.9 disposals, 6.4 intercept possessions and 4.1 spoils. Marchbank signed a one-year contract extension last September and is poised to sign another one-year extension for 2024.

Status: Likely Staying

23. JACOB WEITERING

Age: 25 Games: 159 (2023 games: 26) Contract ends: 2025

One of only two Blues to play every game this season along with Charlie Curnow, the Carlton vice-captain enjoyed another strong year. He played a role in helping turn around the side’s fortunes mid-season, taking a more selfless approach within the defensive group. An elite one-on-one player, Weitering lost just 10.9 per cent of his direct contests this year and also ranked elite for intercept marks at an average of 3.7 a game. He was part of the initial 44-man All-Australian squad, but missed selection in the final team.

Status: Staying

24. NIC NEWMAN

Age: 30 Games: 110 (2023 games: 24) Contract ends: 2025

A key part of Carlton’s defensive group again this year, Newman missed only two games through injury. He was given some big roles throughout the year, including on the likes of Toby Greene, Charlie Cameron and Tom Papley. Newman’s one-on-one work is solid, but it is his intercepting and rebounding that stands out. He averaged an elite seven intercept possessions this year, as well as ranking above average for metres gained at an average of 397m per game. Newman signed a two-year contract extension in July.

Status: Staying

25. ZAC FISHER

Age: 25 Games: 107 (2023 games: 12) Contract ends: 2025

After playing every game for the Blues in 2022, Fisher found himself out of favour this season. He featured in only 12 senior games and was overlooked for all three finals. A half-forward in the first half of the season, Fisher was moved to halfback in the later part of the year and was able to have an impact. He still has two years to run on a contract he signed last July but looks set to seek greater opportunities elsewhere, with a move to North Melbourne in the picture.

26. LACHLAN COWAN

Age: 18 Games: 7 (2023 games: 7) Contract ends: 2026

Carlton’s second selection in last year’s draft at pick 30, the Tasmanian wasted no time in inking a contract extension for a further two years in March before he had played an AFL game. A rebounding defender, Cowan went on to debut in round 1 and featured in the first six games of the season before being sent back to the VFL. He averaged 20.2 disposals and 4.8 rebound 50s across nine games in the seconds this year, with the Blues bullish about what the future holds.

Status: Staying

27. MARC PITTONET

Age: 27 Games: 59 (2023 games: 18) Contract ends: 2027

The Blues are locked and loaded on Pittonet as their No. 1 man in the ruck over coming years, despite the impressive development of Tom De Koning. Pittonet signed a four-year contract extension in May amid rival interest, which will take him through to age 31. He battled some injuries in the middle part of the season but still averaged 9.5 disposals, 24.8 hitouts (8.7 to advantage) and 3.1 clearances from his 18 matches.

Status: Staying

28. DAVID CUNINGHAM

Age: 26 Games: 53 (2023 games: 12) Contract ends: 2023

The Blues forward returned for his first AFL game in more than two years in round 14, after an injury-riddled run. He kept his spot in the side in the charge towards September, before being dropped for the preliminary final after a scoreless semi-final. Cuningham signed a one-year contract at the end of last year and is expected to stay on for another year in 2024.

Status: Likely Staying

29. GEORGE HEWETT

Age: 27 Games: 157 (2023 games: 22) Contract ends: 2025

A key cog in the Blues’ midfield, Hewett has been a very handy recruit since moving from Sydney as a free agent at the end of 2021. He wins his own footy in tight, can carve up clearances and is also accountable to his man when given run-with roles. Hewett averaged 20.2 disposals, 3.5 clearances and 4.6 tackles this season.

Status: Staying

30. CHARLIE CURNOW

Age: 26 Games: 110 (2023 games: 26) Contract ends: 2029

A little shine might have come off Curnow’s season after a quiet finals series which saw him kick only three goals in three matches. However, his home-and-away campaign was ultra-impressive. Curnow stamped himself as the undoubted best key forward in the competition as he won the Coleman Medal with 78 goals from 23 games. Curnow’s contested marking and field kicking were other key parts of his game and he was rewarded with All-Australian honours for a second successive season. He looks locked away as a Blue for life, having signed a six-year contract extension last August.

31. HARRY LEMMEY

Age: 19 Games: 0 (2023 games: 0) Contract ends: 2025

A 201cm key forward who was selected at pick 47 in last year’s national draft, Lemmey has shown some early promise and has already been signed up for an additional year. The South Australian has been working closely and learning from Charlie Curnow and Harry McKay, while plying his trade in the VFL this year. Lemmey averaged 9.4 disposals, 3 marks and 0.7 goals from 17 matches in the seconds. Given his height, he has also been tried in the ruck in some matches.

Status: Staying

32. JAXON BINNS

Age: 18 Games: 0 (2023 games: 0) Contract ends: 2026

Snapped up by Carlton at pick 32 in last year’s draft, the rebounding defender is yet to make his AFL debut but was impressive in the VFL. He averaged 29.2 disposals and 7.9 marks across 17 games in the seconds. Binns signed a two-year contract extension in July, leaving him with at least three more years at Princes Park.

Status: Staying

33. LEWIS YOUNG

Age: 24 Games: 58 (2023 games: 15) Contract ends: 2026

After missing just three games in a strong 2022, the key defender found himself in and out of the Carlton line-up after round 10 this year. He played just five games after that point and didn’t feature in any of the club’s finals. The former Western Bulldogs backman signed a three-year contract extension in March, though, so the Blues are invested in him for the long-term.

Status: Staying

34. SAM PHILP

Age: 22 Games: 2 (2023 games: 0) Contract ends: 2023

A wretched run with injury has meant the midfielder-forward had not been seen at AFL level since his debut season in 2020. Philp has battled foot, groin, hip and rib injuries over the past three years. He returned for two VFL games late in the season, but the first-round draft pick from 2019 was delisted following Carlton’s finals exit.

Status: Delisted

35. ED CURNOW

Age: 33 Games: 221 (2023 games: 17) Contract ends: 2023

A favourite around the club at Carlton, Curnow called time on his career in August. The midfield-forward played 17 games this season, starting as the substitute in five of those. Curnow won the Best Clubman Award three times, while also finishing in the top-three in the Blues’ best-and-fairest in three consecutive years between 2018 and 2020.

Status: Retired

36. JOSH HONEY

Age: 21 Games: 17 (2023 games: 6) Contract ends: 2023

In his fourth season at the Blues, Honey managed six senior games which was the most in a season in his career to date. The forward averaged 7.3 disposals, 2.3 marks and 0.5 goals across those matches, but it was not enough to save his career at the club. He was delisted following Carlton’s finals exit.

Status: Delisted

37. JORDAN BOYD

Age: 24 Games: 16 (2023 games: 9) Contract ends: 2024

Snapped up in the 2021 mid-season draft, Boyd played eight successive matches in the middle part of the season before being suspended for three weeks and then struggling to find his way back into the senior side. The small defender eventually returned for the preliminary final, where he logged 17 disposals against the Lions. Boyd still has another year to run on a two-year contract he signed last September.

Status: Staying

38. SAM DURDIN

Age: 27 Games: 23 (2023 games: 0) Contract ends: 2023

A mid-season draft pick up in 2022, the former North Melbourne defender has featured in just one AFL game since joining the Blues. That came in round 14 last year, before injury struck which forced Durdin back out of the side. Injuries again hit Durdin in the first half of this year. He returned to play some good VFL football in the back end of the year, but remains without a deal for 2024.

Status: Likely Staying

39. ALEX CINCOTTA

Age: 26 Games: 19 (2023 games: 19) Contract ends: 2024

Secured last summer through the pre-season supplemental selection period as Carlton searched for a replacement for injured halfback Zac Williams, Cincotta was a revelation this year. After making his AFL debut in round 6, he was overlooked for just two games for the rest of the season and played in all three finals. Cincotta was playing for the Blues’ VFL team last year, where he finished second in the best-and-fairest before his AFL opportunity arose. He was tasked with some big jobs on some quality opposition small forwards throughout the year.

Status: Staying

40. HUDSON O’KEEFFE

Age: 18 Games: 0 (2023 games: 0) Contract ends: 2024

Overlooked in last year’s national draft, the ruckman was signed by Carlton through the pre-season supplemental selection period. He has worked closely with Blues ruck coach Matthew Kreuzer this year and has shown improvement in the VFL, where O’Keefe averaged 6.8 disposals, 2.2 clearances and 15.9 hitouts across 17 games. He signed a one-year contract extension for 2024 in July.

Status: Staying

41. DOMANIC AKUEI

Age: 21 Games: 0 (2023 games: 0) Contract ends: 2024

The key defender is yet to be sighted at AFL level in his two seasons at Carlton, but is continuing to develop and refine his skills in the VFL. Akuei played 17 matches in the seconds this season, averaging 8.9 disposals, 3.4 marks and 5.2 spoils. The Blues signed him to a one-year contract extension in July and believe that Akuei can become a well-rounded player in time.

42. ADAM SAAD

Age: 29 Games: 177 (2023 games: 25) Contract ends: 2025

Saad had another super season across halfback, missing just one game through injury for the year. He can do it all in defence, as a very strong one-one-one player who also racks up plenty of intercept possessions and can then hit targets to get Carlton’s offence going from the back half. Saad still has another two years to run on the five-year contract he signed to make the switch from Essendon at the end of 2020.

44. MATT OWIES

Age: 26 Games: 49 (2023 games: 18) Contract ends: 2024

The small forward missed five games through injury this year with hamstring and calf issues, but was otherwise a consistent part of the forward line. Owies kicked goals in all but two matches he played this season, on his way to 27 majors for the season. He also logged 17 score assists and rated above average for applying forward 50 pressure. Owies was dropped for the preliminary final, amid healthy competition for small forward spots. He still has a season to run on a two-year deal he signed last September.

Status: Staying

45. ALEX MIRKOV

Age: 23 Games: 0 (2023 games: 0) Contract ends: 2024

Recruited in the 2021 mid-season draft, the towering 210cm ruckman is still yet to play a senior game for the club. Mirkov had surgery in June for a heart issue, which sidelined him for the rest of the year. However, he still has a season to run on a two-year contract extension he signed last March.

Status: Staying

46. MATT COTTRELL

Age: 23 Games: 54 (2023 games: 17) Contract ends: 2024
