Hawthorn has locked away a key piece to build its AFLW side around with Jasmine Fleming committing on a maximum four-year deal to the end of 2027.

The No. 2 draft pick, who has played 19 of a possible 20 games despite managing heavy VCE commitments in her debut season, has signed on until the end of the current collective bargaining agreement along with fellow 19-year-old Laura Elliott.

Fleming is already a co-vice captain and averaged 16 disposals and four tackles per game last season, while Elliott, taken with pick 26 in the same draft, has played 14 games as a key defender.

Hawks AFLW list boss Keegan Brooksby said the club was thrilled by the pair’s commitment to the “direction of the club”.

It comes after the Hawks parted ways with inaugural coach Bec Goddard at the end of last season and appointed Brisbane premiership assistant Daniel Webster as her replacement.

“We are thrilled that Jas and Laura were so eager to show their faith to the football club and sign long-term contracts at Hawthorn,” Brooksby said.

“Both Jas and Laura are inaugural Hawks and have been with us since the very beginning, so it’s exciting that they are invested into the bright future that we are building towards.

“Jas continues to blow us all away with her professionalism and leadership for such a young player, and the sky really is the limit for a person and player of her calibre.”

Fleming appeared in a one-off VFLW game for Box Hill in March and racked up 39 disposals and seven clearances to orchestrate a 108-point thrashing of Casey.
