AFL teams: See all the ins and outs for round 11

It’s a fringe Blue’s time to shine after a key player failed to get up for Carlton’s blockbuster clash, while Essendon has been bolstered.

KFC SuperFooty TV 2022 Episode 11

Fringe Blue Paddy Dow and Essendon goalkicker Harrison Jones will both play their first full game of the season this weekend.

Essendon has been boosted by the inclusions of key forward Jones, best-and-fairest winner Jordan Ridley, midfielder Jye Caldwell and ruckman Andrew Phillips, who has been named onfield ahead of Sam Draper.

The quartet replaces Aaron Francis and Tom Cutler (both omitted) while Matt Guelfi and Mason Redman are sidelined through injury and suspension respectively.

Dow’s opportunity comes after an injury to Matt Kennedy, who has been withdrawn with a corked quad after failing to get up for the clash.

Dow, who was the unused substitute in round 5, has been closing in on a senior recall following some impressive VFL form, averaging 28 disposals and a goal per game.

Collingwood has gone in unchanged.

Silky Saint Jack Billings has been dropped after two games since his return from injury, with one-game midfielder Mitch Owens taking his place.

Billings had a limited influence in St Kilda’s come-from-behind win over Adelaide, finishing with 12 touches.

Meanwhile, Western Bulldogs star midfielder Bailey Smith will miss Saturday night’s road trip to the west, ruled out of his side’s clash with West Coast.

The Bulldogs’ pin-up boy was kept away from the group this week and missed his side’s main training session on Wednesday as he battled illness.

The decision has been made to leave him out of the Eagles showdown, although ruckman Tim English, livewire Cody Weightman and defender Taylor Duryea are back.

Zaine Cordy, Luke Cleary and Roarke Smith (medical sub) have been omitted.

At Collingwood, forward Jack Ginnivan and big man Mason Cox have been named to face Carlton in Sunday’s blockbuster at the MCG.

Although, both players will need to prove their fitness after injury interrupted weeks.

Jack Martin will return to bolster the Blues in the first coaching showdown between former premiership teammates Michael Voss and Craig McRae.

Premiership forward Marlion Pickett will return from suspension for Richmond, while Jack Graham is back from a toe injury.

Hawthorn star Jaeger O’Meara will miss his side’s clash with Gold Coast due to hamstring awareness.

“Jaeger reported some tightness in his hamstring in the last couple of days,” Hawks football boss Rob McCartney said.

“Knowing we have the long flight to Darwin ahead of us, we opted to take a precautionary approach with this one.

“We’d expect him to be available next week.”

Hawthorn will be bolstered by the return of Jack Scrimshaw, with the 23-year-old defender named to make his return from a shoulder complaint.

At Melbourne, vice-captain Jack Viney is back to face Fremantle but teammate Ed Langdon will miss with a rib injury he sustained in last weekend’s match.

Sydney has been dealt a big blow on the eve of its Friday night match against Richmond at the SCG, with ruckman Tom Hickey out through injury.

The big man is out alongside Josh Kennedy (hamstring), leaving Peter Ladhams and the recalled Sam Reid to take on the ruck duties.

Sydney will unleash a second player from its 2021 draft class against Richmond at the SCG on Friday night, with midfielder Matt Roberts to make his AFL debut.

The 18-year-old South Australian, who was a South Adelaide teammate of No.1 draft pick Jason Horne-Francis, earned his senior call-up with consistently strong performances at second-tier level.

Roberts is averaging 25 disposals, nine contested possessions, four clearances, four inside-50s and five score involvements in the VFL this year since being recruited with the No.34 selection in last year’s draft.

Roberts was the Swans’ second pick behind Angus Sheldrick, who played in the first two rounds of the season but is currently sidelined with a knee injury.

The hard-working onballer boasts an accurate left boot and can also be effective up forward, where he may start his AFL career.

Speaking to Fox Footy on draft night, Roberts was thrilled to be heading to the Harbour City.

“I am lost for words and am over the moon to be given an opportunity and so grateful for it,” Roberts said.

“It’s going to be good fun (moving states) and I am looking forward to getting there and getting stuck into it.”

Like North Melbourne-bound Horne-Francis, Roberts played in South Adelaide’s senior finals last season, including kicking two goals and laying six tackles in the club’s preliminary final loss.

AFL talent ambassador Kevin Sheehan was impressed with Roberts’ representative efforts for South Australia, calling him the state’s best player in those games.

“He’s your safe bet, the left-footer,” Sheehan said.

“He’s a bit like a Luke Dunstan, another boy from South Australia. He’s a strongly built, contested-ball winner.”
