In the ever-increasing politically-correct world of modern day sport there are some players still capable of having a laugh.

Swans gun Isaac Heeney might have delivered an overly-serious statement in the wake of a suspension that ruled him out of the Brownlow earlier this year, but he was all smiles in this cheeky snap with partner Steffie Waters during the holidays.

While the snap was posted on Steffie’s Instagram account at Christmas, it was shared widely on social media platforms like X and Reddit on Tuesday night.

“OMG the jumper,” one follower replied.

“If the AFL get hold of this he will be looking from the sidelines for the first seven weeks (of next season),” wrote another.

Heeney’s bid to nurse a stress fracture in his ankle through the finals series came undone when a heavy tackle late in the first term of the Swans devastating grand final loss to Brisbane exacerbated the injury.

The 28-year-old, who enjoyed an outstanding season prior to another grand final disappointment, finished the match on the bench struggling to move as his dreams of winning a premiership were dashed again.

In the Sydney rooms after the loss, Heeney hobbled to meet his family and friends before addressing the Swans 10-goal defeat. He said the Sydney medical staff advised him not to continue on as the ankle injury worsened during the match.

“I have had a stress fracture in my ankle for the whole finals series, so I have had to manage that, and after the Port game I was pretty sore,” he said.

“I had to get through the week and I felt good going into the game and then I hurt it when I got run down and got tackled late in the first.

“I just could not get through that and in the end ... I wasn’t moving well and they said, ‘You are done’. That is frustrating in itself. A few of the boys were pretty sore.”

Heeney was well held by Brisbane’s Josh Dunkley in the infancy of the match and endured a torrid time, which included a turnover in the second quarter which enable Kai Lohmann a kick at goal, though it was one of the rare shots the Lions livewire missed.

He was able to kick a goal against the tide in the third term and finished with 14 disposals in a bitter end to what had been a grand season.
