FREMANTLE V MELBOURNE

If you don’t have Clayton Oliver in your SuperCoach team, open the site right now and put him in. No, seriously. We’ll wait for you. Sorted? Good. Clarry was back to his beastly best at Mandurah on Sunday, with 28 disposals, 11 clearances and three goals for a best-afield 134 SuperCoach points, while Christian Petracca ($556,200 MID, 126 SuperCoach points) was back alongside him after life-threatening injuries on King’s Birthday last year.

Max Gawn ($668,900 RUC, 116) shrugged off a niggle to return to the field and ton up, while Andrew Brayshaw ($591,800 MID, 133), last year’s breakout Jordan Clark ($563,700 DEF, 117), perennial ruck cover Luke Jackson (509,300 RUC/FWD), gun Caleb Serong (623,400 MID, 93) and professional seagull Luke Ryan ($628,300 DEF 90) all got run in the legs and blew out the cobwebs.

However, SuperCoaches were more interested in the rookies than premiums in this game, and there weren’t the answers we wanted.

Nathan O’Driscoll ($198,000 MID, 72) had donuts in the first term but looked impressive in the final three quarters, and his teammate Murphy Reid ($131,500 MID, 50) looked like he had some tricks and played 75 per cent game time. Liam Reidy ($132,600 RUC, 15) was split the ruck with Jackson and his score copped a hit because of it.

Popular rookie Neil Erasmus ($113,500 MID/FWD, 10) had only limited time on ground in the final term.

In Demons colours, top draft picks Harvey Langford ($181,000 MID 43) and Xavier Lindsay ($158,500 MID 53) both look set to debut early, but may not be SuperCoach options for us.

Jed Adams ($119,900 DEF, 54) was drafted in 2022 as a key defender, and while he finished with nine touches and four marks, neither Harrison Petty or Tom McDonald suited up for the Demons so he may be unlikely as a Round 1 starter.

Mature-aged draftee Aidan Johnson ($113,500 FWD, 54) had plenty of game time after Jacob van Rooyen went down in the opening 90 seconds, playing as the backup ruck and as a key forward and looked up to the level.

WEST COAST V NORTH MELBOURNE

Two star Kangaroos have put their hands up to become SuperCoach locks ahead of the 2025 season. Harry Sheezel ($635,600, DEF, 170 points) and Tristan Xerri ($645,900, RUC, 141 points) showed coaches not planning to pick the gun duo what they’ll be missing out on.

One of Xerri’s direct opponents Matt Flynn ($261,900, RUC, 98 points) didn’t play his finest game but still scored well in a positive sign for those starting him.

Recruits Caleb Daniel ($269,100, FWD-MID, 113 points) and Liam Baker ($443,600, FWD-MID, 95 points) made strong contributions to their new sides.

North Melbourne draftee Finn O’Sullivan ($199,000, MID, 99 points) is another slightly more expensive rookie worth considering.

ST KILDA V PORT ADELAIDE

No Zak Butters? Enter Connor Rozee ($529,400, MID, 161 points). The Port Adelaide skipper produced one of the biggest scores of pre-season and looks underpriced heading into a season where he will need to step up again after Butters’ injury.

Jeremy Finlayson ($305,800, FWD, 113 points) shapes as a serious forward POD after appearing to relish a move to defence.

He was the main defensive outlet for much of the game for Port Adelaide. Logan Evans ($371,300, DEF, 124 points) was also prolific, although it’s worth remembering defenders rack up ball for fun every week against St Kilda.

Jack Macrae ($392,200, FWD, 117 points) and Jason Horne-Francis ($537,000, FWD-MID, 108 points) confirmed themselves as must-haves, while Hugh Boxshall ($113,500, MID, 83 points) impressed again.

The West Australian looks a strong chance to be in St Kilda’s starting midfield.

GOLD COAST V SYDNEY

Coaches who moved away from a mid-price madness strategy have been sucked right back in, with another value option starring on the pre-season stage.

Matt Roberts ($434,800, DEF, 119 points) topscored for the Swans after collecting 27 disposals and 11 marks off half-back – including three kick-ins. He roared home in the final rounds last season and looks set to pick up where he left off.

Swans rookie Angus Sheldrick ($161,700, MID, 100) put up his hand for a spot in Dean Cox’s opening round side, and watch the round 1 team sheets for Riley Bice ($113,500, DEF, 67) and Ben Paton ($133,400 DEF/FWD, 61) to fill a bench spot in defence.

For the Suns former Tiger Dan Rioli ($500,400, DEF, 99) showed plenty of dash for his new club while Noah Anderson ($574,900, MID, 124) and Matt Rowell ($550,300, MID, 96) found a lot of the footy. Gold Coast has a great early fixture if you like a point of difference player.

Unfortunately, $99k rookie Ben Jepson isn’t a starting option after scoring just 24 points in 56 per cent game time.

The biggest news out of the game was what appeared to be a serious leg injury to Swans star Errol Gulden.

GWS GIANTS VS CARLTON

Max Gawn and Tristan Xerri have a challenger for the No. 1 ruckman of 2025 in SuperCoach.

Tom De Koning ($547,100, RUC, 138 points) feasted against GWS, dominating the centre square as the Giants rested first-choice big man Kieren Briggs.

While he’ll have much greater tests, the signs were promising from De Koning as he prepares to ruck solo early in the season while Marc Pittonet is injured.

Adam Cerra ($447,700, MID, 108) hit triple figures in less than 60 per cent of game time, thrusting himself firmly into the conversation for a midfield starting spot in SuperCoach teams.

Teams considering Cody Angove ($113,500, MID-FWD, 11) likely need to go back to the drawing board after he was only injected into the game late.

The big rookie talking point, though, was James Leake ($119,900, DEF, 61), who attended more centre bounces than any other Giant and had some nice moments on his way to 61 points.

Lachie Ash ($456,700, DEF, 125) and Lachie Whitfield ($598,100, DEF, 97) had plenty of ball in defence for the Giants.

BRISBANE V ADELAIDE

Any doubts anyone had over Levi Ashcroft ($185,500 MID, 80) should have been quelled by Thursday night’s pre-season match against Adelaide.

The young gun attended centre bounces as got busy – including a passage where he teamed up with brother Will ($441,200 MID, 93) for a chain of several possessions each in the first term.

Sid Draper ($190,000 MID, 59) only came on the field in the third term after being activated as the sub, but had 59 points in less than a half of footy, pressing a real case to start on-field for the Crows come Round 1.

Dan Curtin ($158,600 FWD, 29) looked like he’ll be a first-choice option for the Crows in the forward line, but he didn’t collect a huge amount of the footy and doesn’t look like an option, likewise for Ty Gallop ($113,500 FWD, 24).

Regular premium options Jordan Dawson ($550,300 MID, 111) and Lachie Neale ($645,900 MID 112) look like they’ll carry on scoring, while Dayne Zorko ($595,100 DEF 123) feasted on kick-outs.

James Peatling ($352,800 MID, 70) was good for the Crows, but probably played himself out of most SuperCoach sides.

HAWTHORN V WESTERN BULLDOGS

Sam Davidson is the latest rookie to demand a spot in our – and the Western Bulldogs’ – team to open the season but there was a brief scare over Marcus Bontempelli.

The Bont jogged off with a calf complaint in the first term and didn’t return, but was seen saying “I’m alright” as he walked along the boundary mid-match.

Davidson (113,500 FWD) had 22 touches at the main break and finished with 29 touches, a goal, and 81 SuperCoach points, with David King on Fox Footy commentary saying there was no way he wasn’t there round 1.

“If you looked up lock in the dictionary his face would be right there,” he said.

We may also have a defensive rookie finally putting his hand up, with Luke Cleary ($171,600) looked very composed and spent time on a wing, and with the Dogs’ injury list a mile long could be there in Round 1.

He finished with 89 points.

Joel Freijah ($370,400 DEF, 108 points) would have given coaches considering him exactly what they wanted to see off half-back, while Tom Liberatore ($561,700 MID, 120 points) reminded coaches he’s a contested beast and – incidentally – good at football. Lloyd Meek ($557,600 RUC) and Tim English ($581,900 RUC) came out relatively even in the ruck battle, finishing with 90 and 82 respectively.

RICHMOND V COLLINGWOOD

He’s one of the 10 most expensive players in the game, but Nick Daicos (153 points, $631,400) declared you’d be a fool not to have him in your side, ripping the Tigers to shreds.

New Magpie Harry Perryman(122 points, $417,500) was another who featured prominently, featuring in plenty of CBAs. He wasn’t the only value defender who showed he could be a bargain pick in 2025, with Tiger Jayden Short (107 points, $442,300) collecting 20 disposals in the first half before fading out of the game as Collingwood ran amok in the second half.

Scoring will be tough for the Tigers this year, but maybe there’s light in the performance of the skipper Toby Nankervis (131 points, $590,000).

Luke Trainor (39 points, $113,500) was able to get his hands on the footy with not much time on the ground, picking up 12 disposals (11 effective) and four intercepts after coming on in the second half. He’s a name to watch when round 1 teams are released as a potential bench rookie saviour.

ESSENDON v GEELONG

There were a number of young guns who impressed in Tuesday night’s practice match. We can all lock Isaac Kako (97 points — $149,500)into our sides after a brilliant four-goal performance.

A touch more expensive, but Elijah Tsatas (90 points — $191,200) also looks like a must-have after amassing 31 disposals and 10 clearances.

For the Cats, Tom Stewart (95 points — $521,000) patrolled the back half while Gryan Miers (85 points — $441,400) surprised with 30 disposals.

Geelong captain Patrick Dangerfield foreshadowed a bumper pre-season for Mitch Knevitt (70 points — $149,800) and he was right, with the third-year Cat capping off a standout summer with 22 touches and 10 contested possessions.

In the VFL match, Saad El-Hawli ($119,900) was proficient without being dominant. It looks very unlikely now he will play Opening Round.
