AFL 2024: Relive updates, SuperCoach scores from Super Saturday

Key Swans starred while Mattaes Phillipou and Sam Berry lifted for a Saturday special, but it was old favourite Nic Martin who stole the show. Relive all the action and see our SuperCoach takeaways here.

In Adelaide, the Crows fought back against a high-pressure Saints outfit to claim victory - and Ross Lyon was evidently irked by his team’s effort despite laughing off his smashed phone.

Nic Martin and Jordan Ridley were the beneficiaries of Sam Draper’s dominance, but the Dees fired at ground level to take the four points.

Youngsters Mattaes Phillipou and Sam Berry were the barometers in the middle for their respective sides.

Riley Thilthorpe started as the sub for Adelaide, with Jack Riewoldt saying pregame on Fox Footy that he “just [couldn’t] believe it,” but he starred once he was injected into the game.

Earlier today, the Dogs spoiled Cripps’ party as Ugle-Hagan rose to the challenge, kicking 4.3 to Charlie Curnow’s 3.7.

The Hawks upset the Dockers off the back of James Sicily heroics, while the Swans steam-rolled North Melbourne despite Isaac Heeney’s absence.

Relive all the updates and our SuperCoach analysis below.

THE THREE TAKEAWAYS

Happy Birthday Paps

Tom Papley had a birthday to remember, finishing with his second highest score this season with 147 points thanks to four goals, 19 disposals, five marks, three clearances and two tackles. Only 2.7 percent of SuperCoaches own the small forward who smashed his breakeven of 91 points and almost doubled his projected score of 78 points.

- Jake Garland

West is Best

All eyes were on the skippers and when they were going to lock horns but it was small forward Rhylee West who led the way for the Dogs in the upset to keep their season alive. West kicked an equal high four goals (equal with Ugle-Hagan) to help the Dogs win by 15 points. West finished with 11 disposals, four tackles, two marks and a clearance to go with his four goals, finishing on 106 points, 31 more than his breakeven and 43 more than his projected. It is his highest score of the season and likely to be picked up by a few SuperCoaches for round 19.

Young stars shine

Saturday night saw plenty of young talent reach new heights, headlined by SuperCoach favourite Nic Martin.

While owned by only 28% of coaches now, many jumped on Martin earlier in the year - but it was tonight that he recorded his season best of 140 points after a four goal haul.

Mattaes Phillipou ($218,500) was projected to rise $20,000 at a score of 40 - but after a 101 point game he is set for a nice rise. Sam Berry was another top performer ($282,600) with 106, while Billy Dowling ($208,200) recorded 101 in a great day for Adelaide’s young brigade.

Trent Rivers was another who shone in the absence of both Gawn and Petracca, with a 29 disposal game and 99 points.

While you may have run out of trades to add them to your team this year, these young guns are the future of the competition - and the future of SuperCoach, too.

FT SuperCoach Analysis

Dowling had a huge final term to break the ton, rewarding coaches who needed a big score from the rookie to cover Isaac Heeney.

Eight tackles for Keays boosted his SuperCoach output, while popular trade-in Phillipou fired for the Saints with nine tackles and five clearances to outscore captain Jack Steele.

Sinclair (88) wasn’t at his best, while Schoenmaker (62) provided a decent output for his price point.

FT SuperCoach Analysis: Adelaide v St Kilda

In Melbourne, Rivers spurred the Dees to victory but a late Durham tag contributed to an efficiency of 52% and 11 turnovers.

As a result, he scored only 99 points from 29 disposals.

Similarly, Merrett scored 82 points with an efficiency of 44%.

Caldwell proved his worth once more, but how will a potential Parish return affect his output?

Martin’s four-goal haul boosted his output to a season best 140 points, while Ridley backed up last week’s 129 with a score of 127.

Oliver’s 100 adds to a confusing run of SuperCoach scores.

Rookie Moniz-Wakefield’s 55 points prior to being subbed out of the game will suffice for his price.

10.02PM: DONS SURGE

The Dons have made an inspired comeback and with two minutes to play, they trail by 17 points.

Martin has kept his side in it, with four of Essendon’s 1o goals and 25 disposals.

He has 136 points to his name ... I definitely wasn’t thinking about trading him out ...

Thanks for that one too, Al.

Keep your eyes on this week’s expert trades, and maybe just do whatever he does.

Essendon have kicked the last four goals of the game.

10.00PM: BATTLE DOWN

Leading the Saints’ SuperCoach output on 101 points, Josh Battle heads to the bench with an ankle issue.

Meanwhile, Thilthorpe has been impactful, kicking two goals since being injected for his return.

9.50PM: DOWLING FIRES

Dowling found himself responsible for yet another important goal in a final term - and his success grants the Crows a 15-point lead.

The popular SuperCoach pick sits on 55 points, but updates should add a few more for his effort.

He’s carnage cover for many this week.

9.44PM: 100-GAMER BREAKS THE ICE
It’s a game-high lead for Melbourne - they break it open to a 23-point game.

It was none other than Pickett who extended their lead, looking to celebrate his milestone in style.

Zach Merrett’s efficiency has reduced to 36% while attempting to shake the Neale-Bullen tag, with a turnover leading to another Dees goal.

It’s Disco again - get dancing, Dees fans.

Dan Turner sits on 49 points, but has been influential for Melbourne.

9.49PM: MARTIN KEEPS DONS ALIVE

Who else would it be?

A major from Martin keeps the Dons in it for one final push as they look to clinch second place on the ladder.

He has broken the ton, sitting on 106 points.

9.39PM: SUBS IN

Elliot Himmelberg and Riley Bonner have been subbed out in Adelaide, replaced by Thilthorpe and Paton.

In Melbourne, Taj Woewodin has replaced Andy Moniz-Wakefield.

Rivers, who sits on 81 points after a strong first half, went down to the rooms shortly after with a right shoulder complaint.

3QT SuperCoach Analysis

May has broken the ton in a strong defensive performance, including six marks.

It has led to the Dees’ dominance, scoring eight goals and two behinds from turnover.

Rivers has quietened down following a tag from Durham, while Merrett is struggling to break his own tag, allowing Caldwell to absorb his scoring capacity.

3QT SuperCoach Analysis: Melbourne v Essendon
3QT SuperCoach Analysis: Melbourne v Essendon

In Adelaide, emerging midfielders Berry and Sholl have willed their side back into the contest, while Phillipou has starred for the Saints.

Berry is only $282,600, but owned by only 3% of coaches after falling victim to the sub vest on multiple occasions this year.

Steele could break the ton, or he may fall just short to record another uninspired result - which will it be?

9.25PM: PHILLIPOU FIRES

The first major of the term is worth the wait as Phillipou slots an impressive major from the boundary in the wet. He sits on a team-high 78. Thanks Al for encouraging me to bring him in this week, I owe you one.

9.23PM: HIND IN

Nick Hind has been activated, replacing Peter Wright.

Essendon are ready to run.

9.18PM: TAG WATCH

Sam Durham seems to have gone to Rivers, who has been influential for the Dees.

He has scored only one SuperCoach point this quarter.

Trent Rivers has been lively for the Demons, Photo by Kelly Defina/Getty Images.

Alex Neale-Bullen is also running with Merrett, attributing to his low efficiency.

9.16PM: DON RISING

As a team, Essendon continue to rise to the challenge - this time, Caldwell has benefited in a SuperCoach sense, increasing his output to 68 points after four tackles this quarter.

Melbourne have been the better team in the rain, but as it dries out, Essendon look dangerous.

9.14PM: KEEN ON KEANE

Mark Keane sits on 56 points, but has been solid all year with an average of 80.5.

He’s been important for the Crows tonight alongside Nick Murray (67).

HT SuperCoach Analysis

In Adelaide, Berry (69) and Dawson (52) are keeping their side in the contest, while Phillipou has once again proven his VFL spell was worthwhile.

Berry has 10 tackles, with Phillipou on 6, helping to boost their scores.

Dowling (45) and Schoenmaker (41) are still tracking nicely, while Laird (34) has been relatively quiet.

In Melbourne, the Dees’ ascendency has come off the back of an inspired performance from Rivers, who has gathered five clearances - but had seven turnovers.

Martin and Ridley continue to influence the contest, but will it be enough to get the Dons over the line?

Merrett (51) is going at a uncharacteristic 41% efficiency, contributing to his lower-than-usual but still solid score.

8.33PM: WEEK OF CARNAGE

This week has been interesting for SuperCoaches to say the least, with injuries galore topped off with a suspension and a few axings: does anyone else feel like this guy?

8.31PM: ADELAIDE UP FOR THE FIGHT

At Adelaide Oval, the Crows have fought back to lessen the margin to three points.

Sam Berry has seven disposals, seven tackles, two score involvements and 49 points - could he be the key to success for Adelaide’s midfield?

Meanwhile, Phillipou has had only one touch this quarter ... it could be because I traded him in.

8.30PM: MILKSHAKE BRINGS ALL THE GOALS TO THE ‘G

That could be a stretch, but it sounds good.

Clayton Oliver and Kozzie Pickett are receiving running repairs on the bench.

The Dees’ pressure has soared to 241, and the game has become an arm wrestle as Melksham evens the ledger.

8.27PM: MARTIN CAPITALISES

Martin was the beneficiary of an immense team effort from the Dons as the rain begins to pour once more.

Ridley has 255 metres gained from 14 disposals, sitting on 61 points, level with Martin.

8.19PM: FOGARTY DOWN
Darcy Fogarty is receiving attention on his ankle, but looks to be set to return to the field.

He landed awkwardly after a contest.

In Melbourne, the Dees are leading the clearance count 6-0 to start the second term despite Harrison Petty struggling against Draper in the ruck.

QT SuperCoach Analysis

In Adelaide, St Kilda have recorded 28 tackles in the first quarter - their highest number in one quarter this year.

Cooper Sharman has kicked two goals, while Phillipou has eight touches and three clearances.

Schoenmaker (owned by 23% of coaches) and Wanganeen-Milera (owned by 14% of coaches) have propelled the ball out of the backline, while Steele has fought hard.

Billy Dowling (20) is outscoring Rory Laird (15), while Jordan Dawson sits on 21.

In Melbourne, Ridley and Martin have been the beneficiaries of Draper’s dominance, while Rivers has been immense for the home side.

Zach Merrett continues his strong from - 7.2% of all coaches have him as their captain tonight.

Caldwell (28) has too been solid.

8.01PM: PICKETT SNAPS IN 100th

The Bombers take a one-point lead into quarter time as Kysaiah Pickett fires in his 100th game.

8.00PM: DONS DOMINANCE

Essendon are controlling the footy, largely through Draper’s ability to capitalise on the inexperienced Petty.

Martin (45) and Merrett (34) have also be integral in their disposal dominance, winning the count 103-66, while Ridley (40) had 11 disposals at 100% efficiency.

Meanwhile in Adelaide, Lachie Murphy has kept the Crows in touch with a late goal.

7.47PM: PRESSURE IS HOT

To the eye, the pressure is high in both of tonight’s matches - at Adelaide Oval, though, St Kilda are red-hot with a rating of 255, while the Crows sit on 203.

7.56PM: BURN BABY BURN

Disco Turner!

What an absolutely thumping goal from the young star, reducing the margin at the MCG to seven points.

7.54PM: YOUNG GUNS SHINE

Arie Schoenmaker and Billy Dowling are lighting it up at Adelaide Oval, with 2o and 23 points respectively.

The former has a game-high seven disposals, six being kicks, as well as three marks.

It comes in a week where these players - who usually warm SuperCoaches benches - will need to be used as coverage for some serious carnage.

7.44PM: MATTAES MAGIC

Phillipou was traded in by 1,886 coaches this week, and has started in the middle once again with three disposals (two clearances) and 12 points early.

The conditions around the grounds at the MCG have improved, with the rain settling.

7.41PM: MALIGNED STARS START HOT

Jack Steele and Nic Martin have come under fire from SuperCoaches as of late, but both have started in hot SuperCoach form.

The Saints skipper has 23 points, while Martin has 19.

7:16PM: FULL TIME SUPERCOACH LEADERS

The Dogs have ruined the Cripps and Blues party thanks to four goals to Ugle-Hagan and Rhylee West, holding on to a 14 point win.

Adam Saad (133), Bailey Dlae (124) and Ugle-Hagan (124) were the top three for SuperCoach scores in what was one of the games of the season.

Rhylee West has kicked a game high four goals as the Dogs kick clear to 23 points early in the fourth quarter.

West has had 10 disposals, four tackles, one mark and a clearance to go with his four goals and sits on 99 SuperCoach points.

6:46PM: TEAMS LOCKED IN

The teams are locked in at Adelaide Oval and the MCG but there is a huge surprise for Crows fans.

Riley Thilthorpe is the sub in his first game back with Ben Paton the sub for the Saints, while at the G’ Taj Woewodin is Melbourne’s sub with Nick Hind sub for Essendon.

6:38PM: THREE QUARTER TIME SUPERCOACH LEADERS

6:21PM: SAAD CRACKS 100

The Bulldogs have held onto an 11 point lead with Dale reaching the triple figures, the first player of the Dogs but Adam Saad has come with a vengence in the third quarter.

Saad was sitting on 71 SuperCoach points at half time, he now sits on 107 midway through the third quarter as the Dogs have lifted their pressure and run this term.

Dogs Rhylee West kicked his first just to steady the Blues run.

5:15PM: DOGS RESPOND EARLY

After kicking just seven behinds in the first quarter and trailing by 15 points at quarter time, the Western Bulldogs have kicked the opening three goals of the second term.

But the early talk was on Cody Weightman who flew early on centre wing.

4:35PM: TEAMS LOCKED IN

It looks like the tagging roll from Carlton’s Alex Cincotta will go to Marcus Bontempelli there were no late changes for Cripps’ 200th.

Matthew Kennedy is the sub for Carlton while Riley Garcia is the sub for the Bulldogs.

1:45PM: MATCH UPS TO WATCH

Veteran Michael Walters has been named the sub for the Dockers with Harry Morrison the sub for the Hawks down in Tasmania.

VETERN NAMED SUB, FISHER SOLID IN VFL

Sydney has named recalled veteran Luke Parker as the sub for this afternoon’s clash with North Melbourne.

Parker will play his first game of the season this afternoon, coming in as a late change for Sam Wicks.

Zac Fisher played a game in the VFL, collecting 27 touches in North Melbourne’s win over the Swans in the reserves.

Daily Telegraph reporter Lachlan McKirdy was at the ground and said Fisher was “pretty good”, with skipper Jack Watkins best on ground.

Cooper Harvey had the winning goal at the death to put the Roos in front.

Does it mean Fisher returns next week at AFL level? Who knows.

Paul Curtis will be the sub for North Melbourne, while Michael Walters and Harry Morrison will be the subs in Launceston for Hawthorn vs. Fremantle.

PARKER NAMED AS SWANS MAKE SHOCK SELECTION CALL

The Swans are set to make the late decision to recall former captain Luke Parker for his first AFL appearance of the year.

Parker was named to return from his six-match suspension for a high bump in the VFL on Saturday morning against North Melbourne.

However, he was a late omission with Sam Wicks taking to the field against the Kangaroos at Tramway Oval.

Wicks was originally omitted from the AFL side to accommodate for Callum Mills’ return. However, he was named back in the team once the Swans’ appeal for Isaac Heeney’s ban was unsuccessful.

Parker, 31, missed the opening month of the season after breaking his arm in the Swans’ pre-season match against the Giants.

He returned via the VFL, playing four consecutive matches from round five before being hit with his massive ban for a high bump.

The midfield general’s return coincides with club captain Mills also being named to play his first AFL game of the year.

Longmire has turned to two of his most experienced players as the Swans look to cover the suspension of Heeney and break their two-game losing streak against North Melbourne.
