AFL 2024: Live updates, SuperCoach scores for Carlton vs. Melbourne

Melbourne makes a late comeback, led by Christian Petracca, but Carlton holds in another epic contest. Here are three SuperCoach takeaways from the contest and a recap of the action.

SuperCoach AFL: Buy, Hold, Sell Round 9

Carlton has solidified itself inside the top-eight after surviving a massive scare against Melbourne in wet and windy conditions at the MCG.

The Blues kicked the first six goals of the contest before Melbourne fought back for the next three quarters as Carlton responded to every threat.

Melbourne kicked the last four goals to turn a 28-point deficit to one with 40 seconds to go.

A late tackle from Blues duo Nic Newman and Patrick Cripps on Melbourne’s Christian Petracca saved the day to give Carlton the win.

Here are the three big SuperCoach takeaways from today – scroll down to recap all the action as it happened.

OLIVER NOT THERE YET

Clayton Oliver was one of the most talked about players during the week and ultimately he didn’t deliver, scoring 87 points. While the score was great, everyone who traded him in would have been expecting more after scoring 141 points last week. He had 26 disposals, four marks and eight disposals, so solid numbers, but not ones that translated into a good score. Most coaches will probably keep him next week, hoping he’ll have another game like the 140+ last week but time is running out on him being a viable option.

PITTONET NUMBER ONE AT BLUES

Marc Pittonet continues to be the best ruckman at the Blues with SuperCoach. He scored 89 to keep his average over 100 for the past four rounds. At $451,900 he might be a good option for those not wanting to spend large on a ruckman or can’t afford the top couple of players in that spot.

TIME TO SELL HOLLANDS

For the more than 3000 coaches with Elijah Hollands the time has probably come to get rid of him. Most coaches took the risk at the start of the year as the former Gold Coast player was cheap and at a new club. He delivered in his first game, scoring 116 points, but since then he’s scored less than 85 in each game, including just 48 tonight. For $320,000 there are other players who are probably more consistent than Hollands, so the time is right to move on and upgrade or replace.

10:13pm: Game over

Carlton holds on in another epic contest between these two teams. Christian Petracca has a chance to win the game for Melbourne with 20 seconds to go but is tackled by Patrick Cripps and Nic Newman, who win the free kick for holding the ball. Carlton are able to then kick the ball outside of their defensive 50 and hold on. What a game. Score: 12.5. (77) to 11.10. (76).

10:11pm: One point margin!

Max Gawn kicks a big goal from 45 metres out, and is rushed doing it to save time, to reduce the margin to one point. There are 40 seconds in the contest left. It is now anybody’s game.

10:07pm: Game is on now

Christian Petracca snaps his fifth goal of the game from the boundary line and Melbourne is right back in the contest. Margin is seven points with just under three minutes to go. What a comeback.

10:04pm: Demons still in it

An incredible defensive effort from Jack Viney helps Melbourne to kick a goal. He stops the ball from being a behind, flicks it to the goalsquare and Caleb Windsor soccers a goal through. The margin is 13 points with three minutes and 58 seconds to go.

9:58pm: Controversial moment

Melbourne’s Jacob van Rooyen makes a tackle on Carlton’s Brodie Kemp and he’s been penalised for it being dangerous. Replays suggest it didn’t look to be the case and it should have been holding the ball. If that happened, Melbourne would have had a shot on goal. Could be a big talking about if Melbourne gets close at the end.

9:55pm: Demons stay alive

Jacob van Rooyen kicks a goal 10 metres out after a lovely pass from Christian Petracca. The margin is 20 points with just under nine minutes to go.

9:53pm: Demons attacking but making no inroads

Melbourne has had the ball in their attacking half but have added no score for it. Time is starting to run out for them.

9:45pm: Sub made for Melbourne

Taj Woewodin is on for his first minutes of the game. He replaces Jake Bowey who has been subbed out of the game. Meanwhile, Melbourne misses two chances to kick goals, firstly to Christian Petracca and then Harrison Petty, who was right in front of goal. Margin is 26.

9:40pm: Carlton kicks opening goal

Every time the Blues have been challenged tonight, they have responded with the next goal. George Hewett makes an impact as the sub, kicking his first goal for the night to extend the margin to 28 points in the early stages of the term.

9:33pm: Three-quarter-time

Melbourne kicks two goals in the final few minutes of the quarter and the margin is 22 points. Carlton 11.4. (70) to 7.6. (48).

9:31pm: Melbourne’s coming back

Christian Petracca kicks his fourth goal of the game and Melbourne has reduced the margin to 22 points. Another goal before three-quarter-time and the contest is alive.

9:24pm: Cerra is injured

Adam Cerra has suffered another hamstring injury. He’s already missed three games this season with one hamstring injury. Here’s hoping this one isn’t too serious.

9:22pm: Sub made by Carlton

George Hewett is on for Carlton as the Blues activate the sub. Adam Cerra is the player subbed out. Hopefully it isn’t a repeat of the hamstring injury he got earlier this season, which ruled him out for a couple of games.

9:18pm: Blues respond immediately

Charlie Curnow kicks his second goal as Carlton immediately respond from the Petracca goal. Carlton leads by 37 points.

9:15pm: Petracca keeps Demons alive

Christian Petracca snaps his third goal after getting the ball out of the contest and beating two Blues players. What a goal. Demons now down by 31 points but they will need one, two or even three more in this quarter to stay in the contest.

9:00pm: Carlton starts second half on song

What a controversial start to the second half. Charlie Curnow snaps a goal but Steven May is adamant he touched the ball. It goes up for a score review and while looking at another replay, which could have showed it might have been touched, the play is restarted. An interesting decision from the ARC. Melbourne respond in the next centre bounce with Kysaiah Pickett kicking his first of the night.

8:55pm: SuperCoach analysis

Jacob Weitering leads everyone in SuperCoach with 76 points. He had six marks and 12 disposals to be one of the best for Carlton in the first half. Patrick Cripps also had a great half with 68 points. It was led by his second term, which had 13 disposals and one goal. The best Melbourne players was Alex Neal-Bullen with 67 points. It’s been a tough half for Clayton Oliver who had 32 points.

8:43pm: Half time stats

Goals: Carlton – M. Owies 2, P. Cripps, T. De Koning, J. Martin, H. McKay, M. Pittonet, S. Walsh; Melbourne – C. Petracca 2, D. Turner

Disposals: Carlton – S. Walsh 20, P. Cripps 19, A. Cerra 17, O. Hollands 13, B. Acres 12, M. Kennedy 12; Melbourne – E. Langdon 14, C. Oliver 14, A. Neal-Bullen 13, T. Sparrow 12.

8:40pm: Half time

Carlton leads by 31 points at the main break. A goal late to Daniel Turner keep Melbourne in the contest. Score: 8.2. (50) to 3.1. (19).

8:33pm: Blues extend lead

Carlton now has the biggest margin of the game after a big two minutes from Patrick Cripps. He kicks his first goal of the night before setting up a shot on goal for Matt Owies. He kicks his second goal and the Blues lead by 37 points.

8:30pm: Weitering takes lead

Jacob Weitering is now the leading SuperCoach player on the ground, with 71 points. His intercept marking has been the difference in the contest and it’s now reflecting SuperCoach points. He has six marks and 12 disposals.

8:21pm: Petracca starts the comeback

Christian Petracca kicks the next two goals and Melbourne is coming back. Melbourne has 13 points in the game and Petracca has all of them. The margin is now down to 23 points. The issue for Melbourne hasn’t been inside 50 entries, the issue has been finding targets and taking marks inside 50. Petracca has started to change that.

8:16pm: Carlton extends lead

If the warning bells were not sounding already, they are now. Matthew Owies kicks the first goal of the second term and Carlton leads by 36 points. There’s 13 minutes left in the quarter.

8:13pm: SuperCoach analysis

It’s been an impressive first quarter from Sam Walsh with the midfielder scoring 48 points in the opening term. He led all comers with 13 disposals and kicked a goal. Other Blues to impress were Mitch McGovern (41) and Oliver Hollands (40). The best Melbourne player was Alex Neal-Bullen with 42 points. Clayton Oliver got lots of disposals, with nine, but only managed 23 points. It was also a tough quarter for Christian Petracca with just 20 points.

8:01pm: Quarter time

Carlton kicks another goal before the end of the term, with Sam De Koning kicking a goal from 45 metres out, and the Blues lead by 30 at the first change. Melbourne has been kept scoreless in the first quarter for the first time since 2008, when it lost by 116 points to Geelong at the MCG. The last time it was kept scoreless in the first term by the Blues was in 1942 at Ikon Park. Score: 5.0. (30) to 0.0. (0)

7:56pm: SuperCoach update

Oliver Hollands leads all players with the Blues winger on 38 points. He has nine disposals, one mark and one tackle. Sam Walsh, who has the most disposals with 12, is on 34 points. He has also kicked a goal. The leading Melbourne player is Alex Neal-Bullen on 32.

7:53pm: Melbourne still scoreless

Harry McKay’s goalkicking has improved out of sight this year. He kicks his first for the night, in a tough shot in wet conditions, and Carlton leads by four goals. Melbourne has been kept scoreless for the first three quarters of the term. It’s going to be a low scoring night given the rain, so Melbourne will not want to give Carlton too big of a head start in the contest.

7:44pm: Red-hot start from Blues

Marc Pittonet and Jack Martin, in his first game of the season, kick their first goals of the night and Carlton leads by 18 points. In the last 10 minutes the contested possessions has been dominated by Carlton, who got 17-8 during that time. It’s danger signs early for Melbourne.

7:38pm: Response made by Walsh

Now that is how you respond to a week of criticism. Sam Walsh kicks the ball inside 50, then runs to the forward line and gets a handball from Marc Pittonet inside 50. Walsh snaps a shot on goal and kicks the first goal after five minutes of play. Carlton leads by a goal.

7:30pm: Game underway

The game is underway. It promises to be a cracking contest. The past seven contests have all been close with five decided by under 10 points. This includes the semi-final last year which saw Carlton win by two points to eliminate Melbourne from the finals. Overall, Carlton leads the head to head with 120 wins, two draws and 97 wins for Melbourne.

7:05pm – Subs named for clash

No late changes to each team ahead of the Carlton and Melbourne clash. Carlton has provided a surprise at sub with George Hewett named for the Blues. Taj Woewodin is the sub for Melbourne. Hewett has averaged 28 disposals and 99 SuperCoach points this season. It’s a blow for the 2.3 per cent of SuperCoaches who have him.

7:00pm – Welcome to the live blog.

Final teams and subs will be in the next post.
