AFL 2024: Live updates and SuperCoach scores from Carlton v Geelong

Tom De Koning went nuclear while Charlie Curnow justified his selection for those top SuperCoaches who traded him in this week. Relive all the action and see our SuperCoach takeaways here.

Tom De Koning has steered Carlton to a statement win over Geelong.

The result consolidates the Blues in second spot on the ladder and puts Geelong’s spot in the eight under enormous pressure.

The severity of the defeat pushed the Cats’ percentage below Port Adelaide’s.

Relive the action and all the SuperCoach scores live.

THE THREE TAKEAWAYS

HE COULDN’T BE STOPPED

Tom De Koning continued his emergence as one of the best ruckmen in the competition with a nuclear night.

He finished with 175 points, which was 41 more than the next best on the ground and 57 more than the next best Blue.

It smashes his previous best of 146, which was against Essendon last round.

De Koning had 25 disposals — 20 of them contested — 34 hitouts, seven clearances, 10 score involvements and a goal.

He had an aggression about him at stoppages that was unmatched.

A BAD WEEK AWAITS HAWK, DANGER

Patrick Dangerfield and Tom Hawkins will be talking points this week after a bad night for the Geelong greats.

Dangerfield, in his return game, was immediately under fire for a dangerous tackle on Sam Walsh.

Walsh took the free kick and played out the rest of the game but the action itself is what the AFL has been stamping out this year.

Dangerfield’s 17 disposals afterwards had little to no impact on the game.

Hawkins, meanwhile, sat out the final term with an ankle injury.

The star goal kicker didn’t fire a shot in his first three quarters, having just three kicks.

THEY’RE THE TOP COACHES FOR A REASON

10 per cent of the top 1 per cent of SuperCoaches traded Charlie Curnow in this week and it paid off beautifully.

Curnow kicked five goals for the return of 117 SuperCoach points.

His break even was 100 and he passed that comfortably.

10:30: FT — DE KONING LEADS GEELONG MASSACRE

Tom De Koning’s career-best night has guided Carlton, for now, eight points clear in second.

De Koning took command from the very first bounce on his brother and was relentless for the entire night.

He finished with a game-high and career-best 174 SuperCoach points.

Sam De Koning also had a career-best night, recording 133 SuperCoach points, but he was outplayed in the ruck by his big brother.

Alex Cincotta claimed another scalp in Tom Stewart, despite the star defender recording another big SuperCoach score.

Tom Hawkins suffered an ankle injury during the third quarter and sat out the entire fourth quarter.

10:14: MORE CHARLIE ACTION

Charlie Curnow has kicked his fourth in what is now a massacre of the Cats.

The Blues lead by 50 points with six minutes left in the game.

The two-time Coleman Medalist has rushed to 110 SuperCoach points.

Curnow has 42 goals more than anyone else since the start of 2022.

10:08: CATS GRAB TWO CONSOLATION GOALS

Geelong has bagged two goals off the boots of Jeremy Cameron and Gryan Miers.

There’s 10 minutes left in this match but it seems both sides are going through the motions with the result already determined.

Tom De Koning update: 160 SuperCoach points.

10:00: BLUES ACTIVATE SUB

Orazio Fantasia has made way for Carlton’s substitute Corey Durdin.

Fantasia had nine disposals and one behind before he was taken out of the game.

The Blues look home now, having kicked three unanswered goals to start the last quarter.

9:56: CAREER-BEST NIGHT FOR TOM

It’s officially a career-best SuperCoach night for Carlton ruckman Tom De Koning.

De Koning — on 151 SuperCoach points with 16 minutes left in the last — has eclipsed his previous best of 146.

His first half was the highest-rated first half for any player this year.

9:52: KENNEDY CRUSHES CATS

A soft 50-metre penalty has allowed Matthew Kennedy to kick an important goal for the Blues.

Kennedy took a mark outside of range and was taken to ground softly by Max Holmes.

The goal makes it extremely hard for the Cats, who now need to kick a minimum six goals to overrun the Blues.

9:50: SCOTT SWINGS STEWART

Geelong coach Chris Scott has swung Tom Stewart inside 50 as a forward.

The Blues look to have dropped the tag of Alex Cincotta, with Brodie Kemp currently lined up on the star defender.

9:44: 3QT — CATS TAKE MOMENTUM BUT HAVE PLENTY TO DO

Geelong kicked a trio of late goals in that third term but remain a long way back.

The Blues have been clinical tonight, aside from kicking 1.6 and two out on the full in the third quarter.

Tom De Koning gave away two free kicks but still has an enormous 131 SuperCoach points to the final break.

Tom Stewart has the second-most SuperCoach points on the ground despite being held accountable by Alex Cincotta.

9:38: HAWK INTO THE ROOMS

Tom Hawkins has gone down into the rooms to be assessed on an injured ankle.

Hawkins has had a difficult night, collecting just three disposals for three SuperCoach points.

The Blues, meanwhile, have kicked 1.6 this quarter.

9:33: SAM GETS ONE BACK

Sam De Koning has got a goal back on brother Tom in the dying stages of the third quarter.

Tom tried to take mark of the century on his brother and gave away an unrealistic attempt free kick.

Sam calmly went back and slotted his second career goal — his first since the 2022 grand final.

9:30: GAME IN SLOW STATE

The speed in which this game was played at in the first half has slowed down during the third quarter.

Alex Cincotta’s major is the only goal with eight minutes left in the quarter.

Tom De Koning still leads SuperCoach scores with 124.

9:25: CATS ACTIVATE ROHAN

Geelong has injected Gary Rohan into the match in search for a much-needed spark.

Oisin Mullin is the Cat taken out of the match.

The Blues are yet to use substitute Corey Durdin.

9:18: CINCOTTA FIRES AGAIN

Alex Cincotta’s super night continues with the Blue kicking the first of the second half.

Cincotta, playing a role on Tom Stewart, has now kicked two goals.

The Blues are back out to a seven-goal margin.

9:08: A QUIET CAT

Geelong’s Tom Hawkins is having another quiet night.

He has two disposals to the main break for the return of just 4 SuperCoach points.

Hawkins is owned by very few SuperCoaches but the champion forward is amid an unfortunate form slump.

Gary Rohan is Geelong’s substitute.

8:53: HT — DE KONING, BLUES BLOW CATS OUT OF THE WATER

Carlton, led by Tom De Koning, blew Geelong out during that second quarter.

The Cats closed within six points but the Blues then piled on six majors.

The Blues led by 42 points when the siren went but a goal after it by Jeremy Cameron trimmed the margin back to 36.

De Koning has an absurd 104 SuperCoach points to half time.

8:48: HE’S TONNED UP ALREADY

Tom De Koning has already cracked the SuperCoach century with over a half of footy left to play.

The Carlton star has 102 SuperCoach points with three minutes left in the second quarter.

He is an impressive 39 more than the next-best Blue.

8:39: THE BLUES ARE ON FIRE

Carlton has kicked four in a row to surge out ot a 31-point lead.

Geelong’s top-four hopes hang in the balance here but the Blues are just all over the Cats.

Matt Owies was the latest goal kicker, running in to slot his second.

8:32: YOU CAN’T DO THAT, CHARLIE

Charlie Curnow has his third goal — and it’s the best of the lot.

He shrugged off a tackle and slammed it in on his left boot.

The goal prompted Richmond great Matthew Richardson to refer to Curnow as “the complete key forward” on the Channel 7 coverage.

8:26: BLICAVS BACK IN

Mark Blicavs has been put back into the ruck to quell the influence of Carlton’s Tom De Koning.

De Koning had an enormous first quarter on his brother but Chris Scott has moved Sam back to his natural position at half back.

Tom has 68 SuperCoach points with 15 minutes left in the term.

8:24: CATS BACK IN IT

Jeremy Cameron has propelled Geelong back within a kick with his first goal of the night.

It was Dempsey again who flew and crashed a pack to leave Cameron free to dribble it home.

Dempsey is leading the Cats for SuperCoach scores with 47.

8:21: DEMPSEY DELIGHT

Oliver Dempsey has cut Carlton’s lead back to two goals with a tidy finish early in the second quarter.

Dempsey took what was called a mark inside 50 and immediately played on — perhaps thinking it was play on — and finished across his body.

Dare we say it, it had shades of where and how Nick Daicos finished against the Blues earlier in the year.

8:13: QT — DE KONING GOES NUCLEAR

Tom De Koning has had a nuclear first quarter directly on brother Sam in the ruck.

The Carlton ruckman continued his superb run of form with a 60-point opening stanza.

The Blues were tested at one point, when the Cats kicked two in a row, but they swiftly responded to take a 19-point lead into quarter time.

Charlie Curnow has two goals, which would please the contingency of SuperCoaches who opted for him as their point of difference this week.

Alex Cincotta is tagging Tom Stewart and has the points early.

8:08: CHARLIE HAS TWO

Charlie Curnow has two early goals, as Carlton runs out to an early buffer over Geelong.

10 per cent of the best SuperCoaches traded the Blues’ spearhead in this week and he’s rewarded them with 44 points.

He is playing on Jake Kolodjashnij and is finding plenty of space.

7:57: IS DANGER IN TROUBLE?

By Josh Barnes

Geelong captain Patrick Dangerfield will be sweating on a Saturday call from the match review panel after a dangerous tackle on Carlton’s Sam Walsh.

Dangerfield had both of Walsh’s arms pinned and brought the Blue down in the opening minutes of Friday night’s contest, with Walsh’s head appearing to make contact with the ground.

A free kick was paid against the Geelong star for a dangerous tackle.

Walsh showed zero ill-effects from the incident, racking up 11 disposals in the first quarter as Carlton jumped out to an early lead.

The lack of injury for Walsh should work in Dangerfield’s favour, according to Brownlow medallist Nathan Buckley.

“It’s a matter of how much contact they believe there actually was with the ground because the impact was low because Sam Walsh has continued to play,” Buckly told Fox Footy.

The game will be poured over on Saturday by the match review panel.

A suspension would interrupt Dangerfield’s comeback from a hamstring injury, with Friday night his first game since round 8, which was coincidentally also against Carlton.

And it was also against Carlton that Dangerfield was famously suspended for a sling tackle on Matthew Kreuzer in 2017.

7:54: CATS RESPOND

Geelong has kicked back-to-back goals to respond to Carlton’s proactive start.

Max Holmes has been the main Cat to lift, kicking a goal and winning a crucial clearance.

If Holmes runs hot, it could force Michael Voss to move Alex Cincotta.

Tom De Koning still tops the SuperCoach leaderboard with 41.

7:50: CINCOTTA TAKES EARLY POINTS

He may not have touched the footy, but Alex Cincotta has captured an early win on Tom Stewart.

Cincotta brought the ball to ground while directly on Stewart for crumber Matt Owies to clean up and kick the Blues’ third goal.

Tom De Koning has a whopping 42 SuperCoach points just four minutes into the match.

7:43: CINCOTTA FINDS TARGET

Alex Cincotta has locked onto defender Tom Stewart.

Cincotta has been Carlton’s designated tagger and has picked the Cats’ star defender as his target tonight.

7:40: HEY, BROTHER

Step aside, Ben and Harry McKay.

Tom and Sam De Koning have started this match on each other in the ruck.

Big brother Tom welcomed him into the ruck by kicking the first goal of the game.

7:04: THERE’S NO BREAKING VOSS

Carlton coach Michael Voss remained tight-lipped around where he would send stopper Alex Cincotta.

Geelong opponents have sent taggers to star defender Tom Stewart in recent weeks but Patrick Dangerfield is back tonight.

Voss kept his tactics to himself when speaking to the Fox Footy crew pre-game.

“We might wait another 36 minutes and 16 seconds, gents,” Voss quipped, looking at the coverage’s countdown clock.

“It’s been productive, a midfield role, but we will put him somewhere else if we need to.”

Majority of the Fox Footy panel agreed Cincotta should go to rising star Max Holmes.

6:50: FINAL TEAMS

Geelong has again selected Gary Rohan as its substitute while Corey Durdin will be Carlton’s sub.

The Cats pondered Rhys Stanley coming in as a late addition but he will play in the VFL on Sunday.

Neither side has had a late change.

6:40: MASTER IT AND WE’RE BACK, SAYS SCOTT

Geelong coach Chris Scott says the Cats’ inconsistency has been their biggest enemy in the past six weeks.

The Cats started 7-0 but have lost five of their past six matches.

Scott identifies regularity as his side’s issue but expects them to be hard to beat once they manage it.

“I think it’s a combination of things, we were pretty good last week in patches,” he says.

“The consistency is what we’re after, I think the way we are trying to play is a work in process.

“When we get it right, we will be hard to beat.”
