An allergic reaction to dinner on Saturday with his partner has forced premiership defender Steven May to spend a night in hospital.

May was discharged on Sunday morning after being taken to hospital overnight, joking on social media about a reaction to seafood.

Melbourne was on Sunday unaware of the nature of the food consumed by May, who was in good spirits despite his mishap.

It was another episode in a turbulent week for the club as it considered a trade for star midfielder Clayton Oliver before coming to a rapprochement on his future.

May and his partner Sachi Dade joked on Instagram about his prognosis as she posted a photo of him in hospital.

On Friday night he had finished fifth in the Bluey Truscott Medal before an eventful Saturday night that saw him in hospital.

Dad’s photo came with the caption: “Why does he have to try and die before we go on our holiday?! What I am happy about though is that I can say I saved his life forever now. This will definitely have its advantages,” she said.

She also posted a text exchange with May where he joked he had been “very shellfish”.

A Demons spokesman said May had made a full recovery from the incident.

Melbourne will on Monday start a trade period where the club will lose Brodie Grundy to Sydney, with midfielder James Harmes attempting to find a new club after limited opportunities this year.

The Western Bulldogs have expressed some interest, with Adelaide forward Shane McAdam attempting to find his way to the Demons and Simon Goodwin trying to find a back-up for Max Gawn.

The Demons had hoped GWS free agency ruckman Matt Flynn might consider them but instead he sign on with West Coast given greater opportunities.
