Essendon defender Mason Redman has turned his back on free agency and lucrative offers from his home state of South Australia to ink a new long-term deal with the Bombers.

Ending months of speculation, Essendon on Tuesday announced that Redman has signed a new five-year deal which will tie him to the club until at least the end of 2028.

The 25-year-old had been a prime target for Adelaide, but the Crows will now have to look elsewhere to bolster their backline.

Redman said Essendon’s improvement this year had been a contributing factor to him committing to stay.

“I’ve absolutely loved my eight years at the Bombers but it’s the potential of this group that excites me the most,” Redman said.

“Our team has seen so much improvement this year, but we know we have a long way to go, and we are all committed to working hard to ensure we are all pushing each other to do whatever we can to achieve the ultimate success.

“I couldn’t be more impressed by the footy club this year and the environment we are trying to create. I’m optimistic success is just around the corner for this club.”

Redman has played 98 games for the Bombers since being selected at pick 30 in the 2015 national draft.

He has averaged 22.3 disposals, 6.2 marks, 4.7 rebound-50s and 470m gained from his 18 AFL matches this season after finishing fourth in last year’s best-and-fairest count.

“As a defensive unit, we hope to build one of the best back lines in the comp,” Redman said.

“It doesn’t happen overnight, but it is something we are striving towards, and I can’t wait to keep getting to work with my fellow defenders and the whole team.”

Redman’s signing leaves midfielder Darcy Parish as one of the last key Bombers to remain unsigned beyond this year.

Essendon, which sits 11th on the ladder, is set to face off with Sydney at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night.
