AFL 2022: GWS Giants midfielder Tanner Bruhn traded to Geelong for top-20 selection

The Giants have scored a fifth top-20 pick thanks to agreeing on Friday to ship Tanner Bruhn to Geelong for the 18th selection in this year’s AFL draft.
It is the Cats’ first deal of this year’s trade period, which could deliver the reigning premiers an enormous bounty, with Gold Coast’s Jack Bowes and pick seven also headed their way.
The AFL is yet to rubber stamp the Bruhn deal but News Corp has confirmed the clubs have agreed to it in principle.
The 20-year-old midfielder-forward, a Geelong Falcons graduate, has played 30 games since being the No.12 pick in the 2020 draft.
Greater Western Sydney’s extraordinary draft hand – currently picks 3, 12, 15, 18, 19 – gives list boss Jason McCartney several options, including the possibility of bundling them up to climb the order.
The Giants had already offloaded fellow out-of-contract pair Tim Taranto and Bobby Hill to Richmond and Collingwood, respectively, and are close to an agreement with the Tigers on Jacob Hopper.
They have a significant need for a key forward and are linked to highly rated draft prospects Aaron Cadman and Matthew Jefferson.
Geelong wants to bring in Bruhn, Bowes and Collingwood’s Ollie Henry in the trade period, as well as Irish ex-Bomber Conor McKenna as a free agent.
The challenge in the Henry pursuit is satisfying the Magpies, who emphatically rejected the Cats’ modest offer of pick 38 for the 20-year-old forward.
They are unwilling to part with pick seven, which will be theirs once the trade with the Suns is official.
