Leon Cameron has resigned as coach of GWS after accepting he would not be given a new contract.

The Giants have battled to a 2-6 record this season and Cameron, who is out of contract and had put discussions about a new deal off until the end of the season, has instead chosen to walk away.

Several media outlets reported that he told his players on Thursday morning and assistant coach Mark McVeigh would take the reins for the remainder of the season.

Cameron will hold a press conference at 12.30pm on Thursday to confirm the decision.

Cameron, who took the Giants to the 2019 grand final, has been in charge since the 2104 season.

He took GWS to the finals in five seasons, including 2021.

Former Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson looms large as a possible replacement.
