Plans have been unveiled for a tower providing affordable housing on a quiet Labrador street – but the proposal has sparked howls of outrage from locals.
The nine-story, 42-unit tower will replace two single-level houses on a cul-de-sac site on Sunshine Court.
A planning report filed with council by developer Bowen & XY says the proposed tower will replace plans previously approved in 2016 for a 25-unit building.
“The proposed development seeks to establish affordable housing to address the significant shortfall of affordable housing across the city,” it reads.
“Importantly, the development provides appropriately sized apartments that will serve to contribute to affordable housing stock in the Labrador area and more broadly across the city.
“The proposed building will be nine storeys high, with a basement for parking and building services while the open ground floor will facilitate site access, parking, building services and the entry foyer in the centre.”
The proposed building will go before council’s planning committee in 2025.
However many residents have taken to social media to register their objections to the project.
“This is absolutely disgusting,” wrote Cindy Moceiwai.
Some warned the location’s narrow street was inappropriate for the tower.
“The street there is so narrow as it is. They’d probably have to eliminate street parking in the court to make it work,” wrote Tamika Hicks.
News of the proposed development comes as Ron Bakir’s Homecorp completes construction of the $270m Eve Residences on Marine Parade.
The 157-unit, 25-story tower replaced the old KFC fast food restaurant.
Mr Bakir said completion of the building meant Homecorp had delivered $3bn in projects in the past 20 years.
“We are extremely proud to have delivered such a magnificent project for our buyers,” he said.
“Eve Residences is a luxury landmark that truly embodies our commitment to excellence in residential living.
“We believe that Eve will foster a vibrant community and elevate the lifestyle of its residents for years to come.”
