A rising Brisbane suburb remains within reach of a couple drawing the ‘average wage’

As couples get priced out of the inner suburbs there are still areas within 10km of Brisbane within reach of households drawing the ‘average wage’.

Should you buy or rent in your suburb?

A booming middle-ring northside suburb is still one of the most affordable in Greater Brisbane with couples able to secure a mortgage on less than the combined average wage, new exclusive data shows.

Stafford Heights, about 8km from the CBD, has boomed during the pandemic with the median sitting at $930,790 following a 37.7 per cent rise in 2021, according to a Finder report.

The combined income needed to service a mortgage of about $744,000, based on the CoreLogic median house price, would need a dual income of $167,166.

The latest ABS shows the average wage at $93,496, or $186,992 for a couple, would leave some breathing for too purchase in family-friendly Stafford Heights.

Testing the market to see if the suburb is still as buoyant as last year are empty-nesters Karen and Ross Hayward who have put their family home of 25 years up for auction.

Their four-bedroom house at 28 Costello Place, Stafford Heights goes under the hammer on February 5 as they prepare to move to Cedar Creek.

“You never know when the time is right to sell, but there seems to be a real demand for property in Stafford Heights,” Karen said.

“The kids have moved out and we are a bit young to subside into suburbia, so we decided to live our tree change dream and the pandemic has provided the opportunity to sell.”

Buyer interest in Stafford Heights is strong and it’s popular for families, said Hutton and Hutton real estate agent Allie Coutts.

“Buyers are clamouring to this suburb where the quality of houses by a number of astute investors and owner-occupiers,” she said.
