Just when we’d all forgotten about tariffs, Donald Trump sent stock markets into a spin on Friday with a plan for a huge new move on US allies.

Economic jitters had calmed after Donald Trump postponed high tariffs to give time for trade deals, but the US president sent markets back into a spin on Friday, US time.

He had threatened huge new tariffs on some of America’s staunchest allies and an import tariff for Apple.

Mr Trump blasted the European Union on social media on Friday saying trade talks with the bloc were “going nowhere”.

He then said he would “recommend” a 50 per cent tariff on all goods imported from the EU from 1 June onwards. The EU’s original tariff was a smaller 20 per cent.

Mr Trump also took aim at Apple demanding its iPhones be made in the US. If not, he said, he would look at imposing at tariff of “at least” 25 per cent on the handsets.

Many analysts say it’s simply unfeasible to make iPhones in America without them being so expensive few would be able to afford them.

Meanwhile, a federal judge has stopped the US Government from barring Harvard from enrolling international students while a full case is heard.

That comes after the Ivy League university said it would sue the Trump administration.
