US politics live: Donald Trump finally loses patience with Vladimir Putin, sets 50-day deadline
Donald Trump has publicly lashed out at Vladimir Putin like never before, and given the Russian ruler a deadline - plus an ominous ultimatum.
Welcome, again, to our live coverage of US politics.
President Donald Trump has declared he is “very unhappy” with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and has set a 50-day deadline for Russia to reach a ceasefire deal with Ukraine.
If that doesn’t occur, he has suggesting ruinously high tariffs will be imposed on Russia to try to bring the conflict to an end.
Mr Trump also said the US will send more weapons to help Ukraine in its fight.
He made the announcement in On Monday, US time, alongside NATO secretary-general Mark Rutte in Washington DC.
Mr Trump said his conversations with Putin were often “pleasant” but, ultimately, had proven not to “mean anything”. He expressed his frustration at the Russian dictator’s habit of talking about peace, only to bomb Ukraine hours later.
Elsewhere, former president Joe Biden has attacked the White House’s suggestion his administration abused the use of an “autopen” on presidential proclamations. He called Mr Trump a “liar” in a media interview.
And the British Royal Family has announced that Mr Trump’s state visit to the UK will occur in September. But in a curious move, the visit will take place when the country’s parliament is in recess, meaning Mr Trump will not get an opportunity to address it.
Read on for the latest updates.
