JD Vance vs Tim Walz VP debate: Live updates

JD Vance and Tim Walz faced-off in a debate where Kamala Harris' VP candidate stumbled on a few awkward moments as they debated gun crime, energy, the Middle East, the border, China and abortion.

VP debate begins on question of Iran

Donald Trump and Kamala Harris' running mates have squared off in the only vice presidential debate scheduled before November’s US election.

Mr Walz devoted his first two minutes to an attack on Vance's running-mate Trump. Mr Vance discussed his personal achievements before saying the decision was "up to Israel."

“Diplomacy is not a dirty word,” Mr Vance said. “Effective smart diplomacy and peace through strength is how you bring stability back to a very broken world.”

The pair traded shots over climate change in the wake of Hurricane Helene and Haitian migrants coming into Springfield, Ohio, which made global headlines following the last presidential debate where Trump said they were "eating the dogs".

Mr Vance's mic was later cut as they clashed on the US-Mexico border crisis.

Mr Walz was asked again why he falsely said he was in Hong Kong during the pro-democracy protests at Tiananmen Square in 1989 - something that emerged hours before the debate.

Mr Walz said he "hasn't been perfect" and was a "knuckle head at times," before saying he "misspoke".

They later debated gun crime and abortion, where Mr Vance attacked a "barbaric" Minnesota law and said a close friend of his previously got an abortion. He argued that states should decide abortion policy instead of the federal government.

Mr Walz also made a mistake with a response about school shootings, saying he's become "friends" with mass shooters when asked how he changed his mind about banning "assault weapons" over his career.

Walz: 'I became friends with school shooters'

"I sat in that office with those Sandy Hook parents. I became friends with school shooters. I've seen it," Walz said, when he meant he became friends with the victims of school shootings.

He added he used to keep his gun in the back of his car so he could go "pheasant hunting" after overseeing high school football practices.
