Donald Trump to sit down for lunch with former adversary Joe Biden
In his first interview since declaring victory, Donald Trump has revealed the unexpected outcome after taking Joe Biden’s call.
US president-elect Donald Trump has given his first interview since election night where he had only good things to say about his former political foes US President Joe Biden and Vice president Kamala Harris.
Mr Trump had a brief phone interview with NBC and relayed the contents of conversations he had with the president and VP.
The soon-to-be president confirmed he and Mr Biden would be having lunch together “very shortly” as he praised the “very nice calls, very respectful both ways,” he had with both Mr Biden and Ms Harris.
Mr Trump said he and Ms Harris “talked about transition, and she said she’d like it to be smooth as can be, which I agree with, of course.”
Given his resounding victory, Mr Trump also said he had a mandate “to bring common sense” to America.
This included with regards to immigration.
“We obviously have to make the border strong and powerful and, and we have to — at the same time, we want people to come into our country,” Mr Trump said.
“And you know, I’m not somebody that says, ‘No, you can’t come in.’ We want people to come in.”
However, Mr Trump made it clear he was not backing down on immigrant crime – no matter the cost.
“It’s not a question of a price tag. It’s not — really, we have no choice,” Mr Trump said.
“When people have killed and murdered, when drug lords have destroyed countries, and now they’re going to go back to those countries because they’re not staying here. There is no price tag.”
Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said Mr Trump “looks forward to the meeting, which will take place shortly, and very much appreciated the call.”
It would be the first time they had met since Mr Biden’s disastrous debate performance against Trump in June that forced him out of the race.
