US, Iran to resume talks as White House fumes over leaked ‘top secret' report
The US and Iran have quietly reopened talks on Tehran’s nuclear program after a furious Donald Trump dropped the F-bomb and a report into the impact of US strikes on Iran was leaked.
Donald Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff has said the US and Iran have already begun preliminary discussions about restarting negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program.
According to Mr Witkoff, both sides are engaging in direct talks as well as communicating through intermediaries, following a ceasefire — brokered by Mr Trump — that brought an end to Israeli and US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.
“The conversations are promising. We’re hopeful,” Mr Witkoff said in an interview with Fox News.
“Now it’s time to sit down with the Iranians and get to a comprehensive peace deal.”
It comes as Mr Trump claimed a ceasefire between Iran and Israel was “in effect” early Wednesday AEST, after expressing deep frustration with both sides for violating the agreement he brokered.
Mr Trump launched the blistering attack on Israel and Iran for breaching a ceasefire, saying they “don’t know what the f*** they are doing”.
It comes as preliminary classified findings show that America’s strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities have not “obliterated” them as claimed.
That prompted White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt to hit back, calling the report leaked to CNN “flat-out wrong” and a “clear attempt to demean President Trump”.
