There are thought to be no survivors after a horror collision between a passenger jet and a military helicopter close to the centre of Washington DC.

As many as 67 people could have perished when an American Airlines plane from Wichita, Kansas, plummeted into the frigid waters of the Potomac River when it came into contact with a Black Hawk helicopter.

Recovery Effort Continues on Potomac as No Crash Survivors Expected

The passenger plane, a Bombardier CRJ700 jet, being operated by regional airline PSA for American Airlines, had 64 passengers and crew on board.

Flight AA5342 was coming in to land at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport at about 9pm (1pm Thursday AEDT) when tragedy struck.

The US Army Blackhawk (H-60) helicopter, with three people on board, was flying down the Potomac River.
