Partygoers across Cairns are preparing their costumes and stocking their confetti in the lead up to this year’s Karneval celebration.
The traditional celebration will be held at Cairns German Club on Friday night with full kegs, stocked fridges and outrageous decoration ready for the action packed night.
Cairns German Club president Chris Zilm said all are welcome and visitors should prepare for a night filled with traditional food and drink.
“Karneval started as a pagan event but got turned into a Christian thing before Lent …it’s like our Pancake Day,” Mr Zilm said.
“In Germany they decide to do crazy things and have parties and marches and parades and really let their hair down… they throw lollies, they drink beer and have fun.
“So it’s about not just using all the sugar in the cupboard, it’s about using all the petrol in the tank and really partying hard before you go into a period of reflection.”
Traditionally, partygoers dress up in wacky and wonderful fancy dress with most events having a king and queen of Karneval.
At this year’s event Victoria Hickey will be donning the royal honours and encouraged everyone to come down and check it out.
“It’s actually a really family friendly event and there is something for everyone… much more so than some other events like Oktoberfest,” Ms Hickey said.
The event kicks off at five with live music, prizes for best dressed and is completely free to attend.
