CLIFFORD Park Special School students have used home-made lemonade to raise money for a Toowoomba wheelchair basketball team, learning some commerce skills along the way.
They raised $250 for Toowoomba Bushrangers Wheelchair Basketball Team to buy new equipment.
Senior student Matthew Berry said they chose the team after watching it on television.
"It's great there is a team in Toowoomba. It's a pretty cool sport and they need help," he said.
Clifford Park students join together on a Thursday afternoon for a thirsty round of basketball where the lemonade is sold.
Teacher Margaret Schneider-Grall said students had hand-squeezed lemons from teacher aide Melinda Single's tree.
"It's been so great for the students. They've built better relationships with each other with the weekly games and fundraising," she said.
"It gives the students confidence to deal with money and customer service skills as well as help the wheelchair basketball team."
Toowoomba Bushrangers coach Luke McErvale joined in to referee a game of teachers vs students at the school yesterday.
"Personally it's great to know there are community organisations that are looking out for other people. It's what a team sport is," he said.
He said the biggest cost to the team was travel and nominations.
"Chair maintenance is a big cost as well. It can cost up to a few hundred dollars to repair or fit out one."
Mr McErvale has been part of the team for about 16 years and watched his players gain motivation, life-long friends and sporting skills.
"It's a great sport that everyone enjoys. It's pretty competitive; as you get better it gets harder, tougher and faster."
The team trains at the Clive Berghofer Recreation Centre.
"The money from the school will be used to get equipment like balls and running costs."
