What to expect during Toowoomba bypass build

TOOWOOMBA residents are being warned to prepare for the impacts caused by major works on the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing.

TOOWOOMBA residents are being warned to prepare for the impacts caused by major works on the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing.

Nexus Infrastructure has issued a project update in which it announces that construction will start later this month.

EXPLAINED: The $1.6 billion Toowoomba Second Range Crossing

It warns residents and motorists to expect disruptions and impacts caused by works on the $1.6 billion bypass.

The Toowoomba Second Range Crossing will be delivered in three areas:

  • Eastern area - Warrego Highway, Helidon Spa to Mt Kynoch.
  • Central area - New England Highway, Mt Kynoch to Boundary Street, Cranley.
  • Western area - Boundary Street, Cranley to Gore Highway, Athol.

Activities will occur concurrently across all areas. Initial construction activities will include:

  • clearing within the project corridor
  • minor service relocations
  • implementation of onsite environmental management strategies, such as erosion controls
  • installation of construction and road signage across the corridor
  • establishment of access tracks into the project corridor
  • surveying

Nexus Infrastructure warns Toowoomba region residents to expect the following impacts:

  • intermittent lane closures on local roads with reduced speed limits in place to enable services to be relocated
  • increased levels of noise and dust from the use of heavy machinery and equipment
  • increased vehicle movements on local roads
  • delivery of equipment to the project corridor
  • vehicles and equipment with flashing lights and reversing beepers for the safety of on-site workers.

A Nexus Infrastructure representative said the consortium would work hard to manage the impacts on the community during construction.

"During construction of any major project there will be impacts and changes experienced by the local community," they said.

"There will be some increased vehicle and people movement, localised noise, dust and vibration during construction and these impacts will be regularly monitored and reduced wherever possible."

Work will be undertaken during standard construction hours from 6.30am - 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday.

On occasion, some out-of-hours activities will be required to be undertaken between 8pm and 5am.

Residents will be notified prior to any out-of-hours work commencing.
