A man and a woman have died after being struck by a car in an emergency lane of a major highway.

Two people have been killed after they were hit by a car while parked in an emergency lane of a major highway in Western Australia.

The 31-year-old woman and 24-year-old man had parked their white MG sedan in the southbound emergency lane of the Forrest Highway after 6pm on Sunday.

The pair had got out of their vehicle when they were struck by a dark blue Volvo travelling in the same direction.

The driver of the Volvo stopped at the scene to assist the pair and call emergency services, but both the man and the woman died at the scene.

It is as yet unclear why the pair had stopped.

It has been reported they were on their way to Mother's Day celebrations at the time, as per 9 News.

Investigations are ongoing and police are appealing for any witnesses to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
