A Perth father is campaigning for a spot on the Churchlands Senior High School board, vowing to keep the school free from what he calls the “woke mind virus” and “divisive ideologies”.

Dean Healy, a business professional and father of two, is among eight nominees vying for three positions on the school’s controlling board this year.

With more than 2,300 students enrolled last year, Churchlands is one of Western Australia’s largest public schools.

His pitch to fellow parents pulls no punches, focusing on a desire to safeguard traditional values and prioritise academic excellence.

“I stand as a voice for parents who refuse to let the woke mind virus infiltrate our schools,” Mr Healy said via PerthNow. “Gender ideology and other radical beliefs have no place in shaping young minds.”

Mr Healy says he wants schools to concentrate on critical thinking rather than what he sees as “conformity to government-driven agendas or divisive ideologies.”

“Our children deserve an education that fosters critical thinking, not conformity,” he said.

“I will fight for transparency, accountability and an unwavering focus on real and practical education.

“Our schools should focus on equipping students with essential knowledge and skills, empowering them to think independently and succeed in life.”

The WA Education Department outlines that public school boards are designed to collaborate with the school community to achieve the best outcomes for students.

The boards play a role in governance, resource management, and ensuring the school’s priorities align with community expectations.

School boards, including Churchlands SHS, consist of the principal, staff, parents, and community members with relevant skills and expertise.

The department says diversity in board membership is a focus.

“Ensuring diversity on councils and boards contributes to effective school governance and leads to better-informed decision-making, new ideas, opinions, solutions and stronger connections with the school community,” the department’s online public information page reads.

“Council and board members are encouraged to reflect on the diversity of their school community and the council or board.”
