A horrific fiery crash that killed four people on a highway near a major airport could potentially have been a murder-suicide, according to police.
Four people died in a fiery head-on collision on the Leach Highway in Cloverdale, Perth, about 3.40am Monday, when a RAV4 drove down the wrong side of the road and hit a Toyota Camry taxi.
The taxi’s driver and father of three Sendeku Tesema and his two passengers - a mother and daughter returning home from the airport - were all killed, along with the driver of the RAV4.
Western Australia Police Commissioner Col Blanch described the scene as “heartbreaking” and “tragic”, saying police have launched an investigation to determine whether the crash was a deliberate in a possible murder-suicide.
Police recovered dashcam footage prior to the crash from the RAV4, alleging the driver deliberately crossed into the wrong lane on the ramp onto the Leach Hwy, driving on the wrong side of the road before colliding with the oncoming taxi.
Commissioner Blanch said the footage obtained was “concerning”, but it was too early to tell whether the collision was a murder-suicide.
“The major crash investigation squad is still working very hard to understand the reasons behind the crash,” he said.
“This is a tragedy for the families and certainly for first responders attending that crash … it’s really heartbreaking.”
