CLEARING the runway for sleighs and reindeers, Toowoomba's Wellcamp Airport construction team will down tools today for a well-earned Christmas break.
Wellcamp Airport general manager Phil Gregory congratulated the team for their tireless efforts throughout the year with construction on track for the airport to be fully operational by late 2014.
"Construction of the airport terminal will start in early January and the runway is due to be sealed by April. All going well, we expect to welcome our first passenger services by October next year," Mr Gregory said.
More than 100 residents from the Toowoomba region are employed as part of the airport construction team. Other services sourced locally include civil, structural and hydraulic engineering, planning, printing, design, signage and surveying.
Owned and developed by the Wagner family, Wellcamp Airport is Australia's first privately-funded public airport.
