THE roof has been raised at Wellcamp Airport as construction of the new 8000sq m passenger terminal forges ahead.
The first panels were attached to the terminal yesterday with 70 local contractors involved in the process.
All of the building's precast walls are now standing and the structural steel component of the project has reached the halfway mark.
Wagners director Denis Wagner said all signs pointed towards the airport launching its first passenger flights in October.
"Construction is on track and everything is going as planned," he said.
"The weather has been kind to us and the terminal and runway are both moving along."
The completed terminal will include 800sq m of roof panels, with a plan to expand the floor space by an additional 4500sq m in its second stage of construction.
The entire airport building effort has been a monumental task, with 40,000sq m of cement to be used in the completed terminal, aprons, runway ends and car parks.
Contractors will get to work on a composite fibre entry bridge to the airport within the next fortnight, which will lead cars through a palm tree-lined avenue to the terminal.
The company has already built several of these road bridges throughout Queensland and New South Wales, but it will be the first of its kind in Toowoomba.
The 2.87km runway - only 300m shorter than Brisbane Airport - is also nearing completion with the first layer of bitumen to be laid in early-May.
