We Were There: Wellcamp Airport Construction

WHEN Wagners first announced it was going to build the first greenfield public airport in Australia in 50 years it generated interest across the Toowoomba community.

It was a good news story for the region and The Chronicle was there to cover it.

From the day construction first began, to the day the first plane landed at Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport, The Chronicle's reporters wrote numerous stories to keep the region's residents updated on progress.

We watched as the airport was constructed in a record 18 months.

The Chronicle reported the milestones of QantasLink committing to regular Sydney flights and Regional Express Airlines coming on board.

When the Civil Aviation Safety Authority approved the airport as a certified aerodrome it was clear the first flight wasn't far away.

The airport was packed with residents for the big day when the first flight arrived on November 17 last year.

Chronicle editor Steve Etwell was at the opening day and said it was a landmark event for the city.

"To see what the Wagner family had created in 18 months, without a cent of government money, was staggering.

Toowoomba had been crying out for an airport like this and the Wagners delivered it.''

Wellcamp Airport is important for Toowoomba and The Chronicle will continue to be there to cover its story.
