New Zealand survived a final quarter assault from the NSW Blues to claim victory in the 17&U girls water polo competition in Canberra.
The visitors claimed the match by just a goal - 11-10 - with the NSW side piling on the pressure in the final quarter to almost pull off a stunning comeback.
New Zealand led 7-5 at halftime and 10-7 going into the final period. The Blues outscored them 3-1 but couldn’t find the equalising goal in a desperate finish.
Bianca Pennington scored four goals for the touring New Zealand side, with Emison Styris nailing three.
Keira Rippon, Ella Fraser and Saskia Dunn scored two goals each for NSW.
New Zealand coach Paul Swindells said the experience of playing the top teams in Australia was “priceless“ for his young national team.
“It’s such a great level here, and we just can’t duplicate that in New Zealand, right now,“ he said.
“That was a fantastic game. They really made us work for it across all four quarters.”
Earlier, a four-goal haul by Bles Daly helped the Queensland Maroons to a rousing 11–7 victory over the NSW Blues in the grand final of the girls 15&U competition.
In a ripper of a match, the Queenslanders lead 7–5 at halftime with a four goal final quarter putting them out of reach of their rivals.
Emmerson McEwan and Lucy Stewart both chipped in two goals each for the Queenslanders.
Zara Cooke and Harlei Kricak scored two goals each for NSW.
Winning coach Georgina Kovacs Muller said she was immensely proud of her young charges.
“Right from the get go, the most important thing was to bring together these girls as a team,” she said.
“I’m very proud of them. I believe they lifted the whole level of the competition.
“They improved game by game as well.”
