Wagners wants to build Sydney's new airport

THE family business behind the Brisbane West Wellcamp airport near Toowoomba has put its hand up to build Sydney's long-awaited second airport.

THE family business behind the Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport near Toowoomba has put its hand up to build Sydney's long-awaited second airport.

The proposed new airport for western Sydney, to be built at Badgerys Creek - about 50 kilometres west of the CBD - came a step closer this week.

Deputy Prime Minister and Infrastructure Minister Warren Truss on Thursday announced he had lodged a referral for the environmental impact statement with federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt.

The momentum for Badgerys Creek has piqued the interest of the Wagner family, which has just built Australia's first privately owned and financed public airport on former farmland near Toowoomba.

Wagners chairman John Wagner told a business lunch in Brisbane on Thursday his family now harboured ambitions to build the airport at Badgerys Creek.

"I think that we're perfectly placed to build Badgerys Creek - or at least lead a consortium - and if we can do the second range crossing at $1.7 billion, we can certainly build another airport," Mr Wagner said.
