Wagners claims state award for Wellcamp Airport

WAGNERS has won Queensland’s best engineering project in the Concrete Institute of Australia’s biennial Awards for Excellence.

WAGNERS has won Queensland's best engineering project in the Concrete Institute of Australia's biennial Awards for Excellence.

The ground-breaking Earth Friendly Concrete developed by Wagners' research and development team was used to construct about 51,000sq m of heavy duty aircraft pavements that form the apron, taxi-way and turning node at the Wellcamp Airport.

Wagners' brand of geopolymer concrete is a low carbon alternative to conventional concrete.

It contains zero Portland cement, resulting in a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Wagners director Joe Wagner, who runs the company's Earth Friendly Concrete business, said it was an honour to receive recognition for the airport construction.

"Earth Friendly Concrete is the lowest carbon concrete produced in the world and has high flexural tensile strength as well as very low shrinkage making it an ideal choice for slip formed aircraft pavement construction," he said.

"Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport is the largest application of modern geopolymer concrete in the world, saving 6600 tonnes of carbon emssions."

Mr Wagner said Earth Friendly Concrete was an extremely important innovation created to reduce the carbon emissions in the construction industry and provide the next generation with a superior structural performing concrete.
