Waving backpackers

THE German girls waving out the front of Zimms Corner Service Station aren't hitching a ride, although they've been offered a few.

Penny Razavi and Amelie Boese are two of many backpackers who have been employed by the service station owner Olga Marr to fill cars, wash windows and wave at the traffic along the Warrego Highway.

"It's a job I call driveway service," Ms Marr said.

"We've had backpackers working for us for about two years. There have been some girls from France and Belgium and a Canadian and English boy who did the job for six weeks.

"The customers like the service. The backpackers need some extra cash and I need people to do the job."

Ms Razavi and Ms Boese heard about the job in their travels and will be at the service station for two weeks before packing up their van and continuing on the road to Cairns.

"It's an easy job and good for backpackers," Ms Razavi said.

"Some people thought we needed a lift, others have wanted our number and we've also met some other Germans."
