A woman mowed down by a car after allegedly stepping in to try break-up an altercation has been remembered as a big-hearted friend who wasn’t afraid to help others.
Kylie Sanders, 46, died after being hit by a car while attempting to stop two people fighting on Hargrave Ct in Yarrawonga in the state's north about 8.30pm on Friday.
Bystanders rushed to her side to perform CPR until paramedics arrived, but she could not be saved.
Rutherglen-based friend Jenna Tracy said she “wasn’t surprised” to hear Ms Sanders had been sticking up for someone on the night she died.
“That was the type of person she was,” Ms Tracy said.
“She was a rough diamond but honest and genuine.”
Bria Niven from Rutherglen said both she and her mother, Melinda, were friends with Ms Sanders and were devastated by the loss of someone who was “friends with everyone”.
“We both know Kylie and she was an amazing person who was the type who always stuck up for people in need,” she said.
“She was strong and always so fun to be around. She really was friends with everyone, her Facebook page is already flooded with memories and heartbreaking posts now that she is gone.
“It was no surprise to me to hear she was trying to help a woman in need. It wouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.”
A 26-year-old Tatura man has been charged with making threats to kill, with the police investigation into the fatal collision continuing.
Police allege the man, believed to be one of those in the fight, got into a car to leave after Ms Sanders intervened.
“The car collided with the woman who had attempted to intervene as it left the scene,” a police statement said.
The man was bailed to appear in Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on June 5.
Tributes have also flowed on social media for Ms Sanders as community members shared their love for her “heart of gold”.
“She’ll be sorely missed as a true free spirit,” one wrote.
“She was a big-hearted woman and will be sadly missed,” said another.
Ms Sanders came from the small town of Rutherglen before moving to Yarrawonga and working in the border town of Corowa.
Another person from Rutherglen said “the town was reeling” as they woke up to the news.
Anyone who witnessed the incident, has Dashcam or CCTV footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
